When I was a kid, Dad was planning to go out for catfish. He filled a jar with chicken guts and left it in the shop. Can't remember if it was there for one week or two, but the smell was WEAPONS-GRADE!
The good part was that no one tried to horn in on the spot he was fishing in.

My grandfather did that also , still rember the smell.
That's funny ๐Ÿ˜

My Mom saved chicken guts for bait too. Once after a fishing trip the leftover jar of chicken guts got kicked under the front seat of Dad's car that he used as a substitute mail carrier. You can imagine what the closed up car smelled like a few days later in July!!

having seen the post about using bananas as a bait I thought about some of the "unusual" baits I have used over the years. one that I used often later in the year (as a 12 year old) was when I ran out of worms I would gut a sunfish and use the intestines like worms. I also tried an acorn cut in half, caught a pickerel on it. wondering how many other unusual items have been used by you guys.

When I was 5 (a very long time ago) I was visiting my uncle in Kansas. My cousin took my brother and to the small farm pond. My aunt had given each of us a caramel as a treat. Well, I thought that if I liked caramels, well maybe fish do too! Everyone tried to talk me out of wasting a perfectly good piece of candy but I put it on my hook. Lo an behold! I was the only one to catch a fish that morning!

Getting back to fish tech. I havenโ€™t gone trout fishing in 50 years. I read on the stage about how you have to have 4lb test and what tackle the trout or other fish see. Making sure our hands donโ€™t have odors on them. You know what Iโ€™m getting at. So some slob puts his cigarette out in a stream and the trout eats it. Seems it hung around for a couple more. Kind of makes me wonder. Can I catch trout with pink 20lb braid and a chunk of chorizo?

Went trout fishing in WV and needed something to float a meal worm, so I had some ear plugs from work and they worked great.

Killed a bird once and used it for bait. Caught bluegill and a catfish with it. Cut up pieces of a balloon and used it and caught bluegill. When I was a kid. I believe it was red colored...

Maybe but 8-10 lb line and some pink power bait will do it or a fat night crawlers
