When I was a really young kid we had an Italian immigrant neighbor that made some massive quantities of wine. He’d place his charred oaken barrels and soak them with water which I’m assuming swelled them prior to the wine making process. We’d get a stick and some bailing twine and tie a stone (our lure) to the end of the twine and pretend to fish for nonexistent fish. If we caught nothing (surprise) in one barrel we’d hit the others.

Bj that's what I call a positive outlook. It's all about fishing. Catch is our tip for the effort we put into it 👍🎣

Early morn, slight mist in the air, standing to see the swirl in the water, and no cell phone to their ears.

No matter if it’s a high price rig, a Walmart special, or even a rod called an Ugly stik. Just want to get out there and become one with the environment.

Yep, that is PASSION.

What was the simplest fishing gear you used at one time?

When I was on the Island of Patmos in Greece a guy took me fishing with a circular piece of plastic that was wound with some sort of line and a hook. Can't remember what was bait but I caught 4 fish with my hands and he only caught one!

The first rod I remember using was a Great Lakes rod? It was my fathers, and I have never seen one like it since. It had a plastic case around the reel, shaped like a burl on a tree. Used to ride my bike down to the Detroit river and fish for perch in spring. I finally took it apart and there was a spinning reel inside! Well, being a kid, I finally destroyed it. I wish I had that rod now..

A bamboo cane pole I guess it was maybe 5 feet long with the line, hook and a bobber. When I got to be about 10-12 years old, grandfather bought me a Mitchell 300. I knew I was fishing like the big men then.

Dang G you went straight to big time. Original 300's was top shelf. The 300a not so much 👍

BK now days mindless days have taken in a new meaning. I got a bit older n I started sneaking paps single shot 22 rifle. One store would sell ammo to kids. 50 cents a box. I'd get the money turning in pop bottles. Grab the rifle run out the basement door end of backyard up the alley n into the woods. If I would have been caught doing that I would've been standing up to eat for a month 🤣🤣

My friend and I had a 10' piece of line and a rusty hook we found. put a piece of bread on the hook and tied the line to a branch. we'd play catch till we saw the branch twitch. all we ever caught was hornpout. 1950-52. my grandmother got me a rod and reel for Christmas when I was 8 or 9. reel was a stainless steel casting reel, still have it somewhere..............

About a half mile from the house there was a diversion dam on the river to run water into the old water works building. Used to get up at 4 grab my rod and a can of night crawlers and go there. Almost always able to pick up 2 or 3 and back to the house by 7 for fresh trout and eggs for breakfast. Just the old fly rod leader, hook and a couple of split shot. Wish I still had that rod. 3 piece 9’ bamboo. There was never any question in my mind as to catching. I knew the fish were there and just always caught breakfast.

My hands Plum, have you ever tickled a trout. Works best in tiny feeder streams. You spot one next to the bank, lie down and sneek your hand in from behind the fish. Gently tickle your way forward to the balence point and grab.. Sometimes if they are behind a root or something you can push them forward then move your hand around and then grab. Hubby and I used to see who could catch the most this way

There are so many great short stories in these 2 pages it was like reading the old readers digest stories from the early 60's.

This has been one of the most interesting read in awhile. Hope the newbies chime in.
