I fish early ice mainly for trout. I start at Henry's lake, Idaho. It usually freezes by mid November. Sometimes late October. I will fish on 2" , but stay shallow and keep spred out, away from others. I have a 8" and 6" Nils. I love the 6" with a 1/2" drill. But I do like those 8" Ion's. I can't stand the sound of a power auger, and I know they scare the fish in shallow water. When I first got my 8" Nils hand auger, I used to bet anyone with a power auger that I could beat them through the ice. I also use a spud when walking on to ice.

I’d always thought a spudded hole would scare fish until I dropped a camera down and saw plenty of fish. This was in 10’

No one ever beat me. And I let them start up so they were ready. A sharp Nils cuts a little faster than 1" per second.

Look on Craigslist for hand augers! You can usually pick one up for $10 to $20 bucks! Good cheap choice if your not sure if you will like ice fishing or not!

Well there you have it. If investing it should be electric. I was thinking the same that the gas machines will most definitely be a spook machine. It’s cool that a machine that will be less spookworthy actually beats the others too.

I want to try ice fishing since we now have had 2 weeks of well below freezing temps. Anyone have a good suggestion for getting hole in the ice if you don’t own an Auger? I was thinking about trying my cordless drill and making a perforated hole that I could knock out with a small hammer. Has anyone ever tried this or have a budget suggestion. Not looking to spend a ton on gear until I know if I really want to do it?

Ken, like everyone said, safety first re thickness. Once past that, if ice safe but not too thick, simple hatchet can do the job. A heavy, long bar with tampered end also works--just don't let it slip out of your hands. Wear glasses. Bring a strainer to clear out the small pieces of ice. Away you go.

One caution on augers particularly hand crank. Protect the blades AND be gentle with the last revolution as it breaks through the ice. The urge to force or push it through can tweak the blade angle enough to render the auger useless. Dont buy a used one because of this. The angle and sharpness of blades is precise. As you break through, pull up sharply letting the spiral portion clean out the hole.

Suggestion: If you don't know anything about ice fishing, Google "ice fishing guides near me". There are hundreds in Michigan, and the farther north you go, the more there are.
For $150.00-$250.00, you will learn more in 8 hours than you could through trial and error in a whole season. They will also provide the gear. Drive up with a buddy or two and share the gas. You will learn in a hurry if it's for you. I highly recommend this alternative because I have 10 grand or more in ice fishing equipment, shelters, Snow Dog, Vexilar, quad, heaters, etc. All of that stuff is by no means required but the more you fish, the more you will accumulate. Paying a guide for 1 day is not only safer, it will be far more comfortable and fun.
You will find that most ice fisherman are really good guys who don't mind sharing info. The better they are, the more they will share because they won't feel threatened by your success. I like to take newbies and get them enthused because it is nice not being the only crazy S.O.B. sitting on a bucket in -20 wind chill.

Check your reg's. Note sure about Ohio but in wisconsin there is a hole size limit.

Go where others are drilling holes and use ones they’ve vacated. Small bar of some kind to break the hole back open again works good too. Invest in a hole spoon to clean the small ice and slush out of the holes is another must have.
