You surprised a whole bunch of us with this photo. Include me among that group. That dorsal fin looks like something else, but can't drag it out of my memory bank. Love those eyes, not really fish-like at all, more like a mammal , to me. Thanx for sharing this......

Kinda resembles a Bowfin, with the long dorsal fin.

Wow what's the limit on them a day, and what's the season run thru. And do you ned a license on the river, when it's frozen.

Lots of burbot in bay of Green Bay. Will be spawning in a few weeks on reefs. Walleye fishermen hate them. Will see a lot of them dead in ice.

Wow! Never heard of a cusk. Reminds me of the snakeheads we catch in Virginia's Potomac River.

I will never really know just how much I don't know. When someone tells me they caught a 'cusk', in the past, my question would have been was he breaking into a home? Now I know. Thank you for the brief education.

True salt water ling cod are a different fish entirely from a burbot. They are often called the same thing because they look a lot alike. Note the spiny fins on the ling cod and the large mouth full of very sharp teeth. Both are missing on the Burbot or cusk Ling Cod can grow to over 70 pounds. Both eat well and freeze well. This is first hand experience.

Very true. I have the same kind of, first hand, experience. That’s an 85 pound ling cod I caught out of kachamak bay in Alaska. Those black rock fish are 10 pounds.

Now that is good fish to eat. Some call them lemon fish. I caught one while offshore, fishing off a rig. The cook, clean and wrapped a piece for me, and he cooked the rest for the crew.

That is an impressive catch, even out of Alaska. Great job.

My buddy in San Antonio forwarded this photo and info to me from another friend of his back in N.H. !

This is the new (N.H.) state record cusk - it was caught through the
ice at Lake Winnipesaukee on Thursday, Jan. 13th, 2022 ! It measured out to 35" and weighed
in at 12 lbs. - 8-3/4 oz. !

Never seen one of those before I don’t believe. Pretty colors.

They are native to Montana as well, go by burbot. Mostly targeted through the ice from what I understand.

That’s what I was thinking. Looks like a Ling but not quite as ugly.
