Just so you know. I had to do 15 -20 MPH top end on I-80 with 3-4 inches or more on the road, the plows had not found their way out yet. Good snow tires, all lanes full, lots of distance between me and the next car. I was talking about the free wheeling on a standard rear end or front/4 wheel drive. I also drove in the Rockies at 8-10 K feet with chains on my trucks snow tires. When the trans is engaged and you either hit a patch of black ice on a bridge/overpass and your in gear your going to slide or spin out. Now i didn't drive truck, but I had to drive about 40K plus a year running computer service calls. I watched a lot of people spin out into the woods because of the Free Wheeling and trying to stop on Snow and ice. The only accident I had because of Weather was because I was boxed in by a Semi on my right the median with about 3 feet of snow to my left and the lady in front tried to go from the left lane to the center in a Datsun Z and the 1 foot ridge from the snow plow turned her 90 degrees in the left lane. I was trying to stop for 3-400 yards. Finally aimed for right behind the right front tire and ahead of the pasenger compartment. My tap spun her straight again. The guy behind me stopped about 2 feet from me. I got out and went up to the driver window and asked if she was OK. She was shaking so I asked her 2 sons if they were OK. One had dived down into the passenger floor boards the over was under the back glass. They both said they were OK. Now I-80 on that section was slant domed for the left lane to the center so each time I tried to brake the car would start to slide to the center lane. The Semi in the center lane would blow his horn and I would straighten out and start tapping the brakes to slow down again. 25 mins later the police still hadn't got to us they had to many bad accidents to worry about ours. We traded info and drove to our homes.
That was over 8 years and 330K+ miles driving. I thought about that i should have gone into the Median but the next day driving by in Daylight noticed that if I had, I had a real good chance of going through the opening to the cross road below. 4 wheel drive means you can go, it does NOT help you stop.
What is the biggest difference between a frog and a toad ?
Toads don't hang drywall !
The other issue is to NEVER use cruise control when it's raining or snowing. If you begin to lose traction. your drive wheels continue to push/pull the vehicle.
Just another ounce of prevention...

im referring to tthe a//ho that lives somewhere that rarely gets snow/ice on the road and has to go to the store for
beer and cigs and daily lotto etc. i lived in albuquerque and n tx 40 yrs; thats what im talkin bout. now i live in maine and driving is ok.
Gotcha. Sorry. It DOES make a difference where we live and what we’ve dealt with for sure. With the influx of people fleeing the big cities now we’re seeing lots of folks around here that don’t get it too good. Wrecker companies are making bank though. We see electric vehicles riding on the back of roll back wreckers a bunch here. They don’t like cold very well. It’s a good thing their cell phones don’t run off of their car batteries😬

Around here a set of studded tires work wonder on ice and snow ❄️ YEEHAW especially driving hundreds miles around trip to work and back ❄️❄️❄️
Until the studs all fly off huh?
Put the car in neutral? It’s the brakes that put you out of control. Drive like you have no brakes. If you live south of DC don’t drive at all!! If you stayed home last week I wouldn’t have been stuck in one place on i95 in Va for 24 hours!!

LOL I fully understand. But when you hit the brakes and have loss of tracktion is when the freewheeling in the axles kicks in.

Ask a garage mechanic when Try putting those studs out
Hey everyone after 29 years driving semi and 9 years driving bus in Alaska,Idaho and Washington I would just like to add to all the good advise given on winter driving. Pay attention, slow down, increase following distance if at all possible do not travel in groups of vehicles if someone messes up your in the middle of it, leave yourself a way out.
