For those that don't know this Tip. In snow always drive with your hand on the shifter if an Automatic Transmission.
Put the car into Neutral BEFORE hitting the brakes. Stops the free wheeling on the one wheel, So you don't go doing doughnuts off the side of the road.
Be polite and blow the horn to let the guy in front of you know your going to hit him. 90% of the time they step on the gas and get out of your way.
Tap the breaks don't lock them. Coming up to a bridge or overpass, Line up for straight across and put it in neutral, Coast across, you can't steer anyway.
I know all you guys know this, just reminding you of the fun those that have to drive in it will have.
Did it too many years running service calls. Had one call when I was living in Dover,NJ. Was called at night and asked to drive into NYC to the foot of Wall Street for a printer that no one else knew, as it was real old.
Woke up at 6:30 and looked outside as it was snowing. was up and out before 7. 40 miles later and 4 hours later, walked into the customers office and told them I was there to fix their printer.
"You were supposed to be here at 8 AM!"
I picked up my bags and said,"I didn't drive 40 miles for 4 hours to hear this!", and turned to walk out.
"4 hours! Don't you live in NC?"
"Do I look like a fool?. No I don't live in NYC!"
After that they were really nice so I fixed their printer.
The people in NYC pay more in State and City taxes than I did in NJ, even with property taxes back then.

LOL Good stuff Audigger. I was taught a very small amount of acceleration on an icy bridge can keep the car straight if the rear end starts coming around. I had a 72 Chevy Malibu. Never thought about front wheel drive or otherwise. I Learn something everyday, Thanks.

As for the service call.....I use to say, you don't call the fire department and then ask me what took so long to get here, you should have called earlier. You also don't tell the firemen how to put the fire out. Good stuff.

I don’t believe putting a vehicle is ever a good idea. Never heard that one. Must be a MD thing.maybe if you have a stuck accelerator .don’t listen to this guy you can lose control . Read up on putting your car in neutral while driving .don’t drive around here we will push you off the road if you put your car in neutral.

Growing up in New England, practically learned to drive in snow. Where I live now is up a small mountain so it's lowest gear possible, slow and steady. Can't get up the hill...go back down, park and walk, lol!!!

He was trying to give some helpful hints. No need to be mean. Where I live his technique will work in many situations. When you have 300 head of livestock to feed every day in icy conditions in steep terrain staying home is not an option. 😉

I've always done the neutral move growing up with rear wheel drive. You're trying to be light on the brakes, but the rear wheels are still trying to push you forward. Especially helpful trying to turn into a side street, while going down hill.(like my neighborhood). Otherwise the front wheels just slide like skis when you turn the steering wheel. Not as necessary with 4wd, but still handy at times.

Okay, I have been driving for only 45 years and most of those involved WI Winter driving and all have been in the Northern third of the Country from Maine to Wyoming. I have never heard of putting a vehicle in Neutral for control. I want to be in control and be able to power around or through something which may be questionable.
1. Make sure you have a decent set of tires before Winter. If you don’t…you’ll be asking for trouble.
2. Allow for extra travel time.
3. Don’t follow too close.
4. Allow for extra distance to stop. Let off the gas early.
5. If you slide, turn toward the slide to gain control and stay off the brakes!
6. If you are driving in extreme cold (on good roads) over a bridge over a bridge built over water, remember the bridge is surrounded by cold air (with no insulation from the ground) so condensation can form on the bridge. Don’t accelerate as you can lose control, just let off the gas to maintain your speed and coast over it to maintain control.
There are exceptions of course, just use your best judgment.
I drove semi’s professionally for 10 years and have witnessed a lot of bad driving in all conditions.

Two French-Canadian brothers
come down to Vermont to apply
for a posted driving job at 'St. Johnsbury', one of the biggest
trucking firms in the Northeast !

Foreman asks the brothers what
kind of experience they've had
driving trucks, so the older brother
tells him -

"Hey, you know, we've driven delivery trucks, logging trucks, moving vans
all over the northeast - we drive on-road, off-road, highways, back
country roads, everywhere !"-

"Well, then, ! Let me ask you a
question ! You're driving down
a steep mountain road, it's black ice, your brakes fail and there's a train approaching the crossing at thd bottom of the hill - what are you
gonna do ?"

"Oh, that's easy ! I just wake up
my brother Joe ! He's never seen
an accident like that !"
