Sdcmaui, I'm pretty sure that is the state fish of Hawaii, but I don't understand why you tried to eat it! I can just imagine what you would have done if it were a Puffer fish.
Reef TRIGGER FISH
Hawaiian name! HUMUHUMU NUKUNUKU APUA'A
PICASSO TRIGGER FISH

Awesome fish. I would like to add one to my photo list of caught fish. For now, I will be content to just get out fishing in the local lakes/ponds when they reopen. If I painted a lure like that, people would call me crazy.

humuhumunukunukuapua'a is Hawaiian for "triggerfish with a snout like a pig's". According to wikipedia. Like it used to say at the bottom of my posts. Thank you. If it's the state fish are you supposed to be eating them?

Went fishing over here on Maui and caught some funny looking fish. They are really pretty but taste a little odd.
The are quite a good fighter for their size, around 11--12 inches long

SD, you ever asked a local what it is? It looks like a chicken hen to me. Was it finger lickin good?

bapabear, if you just so happen to paint a lure like that fish I would be honored to pay you for it! I've caught many of this fish in Hawaii with my grandfather, and everyone were release, if we did not eat any fish we were told to release them. They have some mean teeth, chomp on corals and love sea urchins, their skin is so tuff you can't cut with a knife, you have to use a pair of dikes to cut their skin, then pull it off. We have several different trigger fishes that do get larger.

Don't hold your breath. I was kidding. None of the lures I paint end up looking like the fish I was trying to represent, That being said, many do catch fish. I think it is because the fish have never seen anything like it before. There are some real craftsman and artist on here. Maybe one of them will read this and contact you.

Spiritof27, that fish was made famous when in was put into the song" My Little Grass shack in Kealekekua Hawaii" not sure about eating state fish , when our grandfather said no , he meant it, and we had much better fishes to eat. Also when they got hooked and on shore they would oink like a pig, last part of it name pua'a, pig !

That is a triggerfish. They are popular saltwater aquarium fish (big aquariums). There are some in the Atlantic south of the Carolinas.

I hope you can eat the state fish, because the state fish in Washington is the steelhead. Stay safe.

Just being a 'state fish' doesn't necessarily mean that it is
protected - it usually depends
more on the rarity of the
species !

The 'state fish' of N.H. is the
brook trout, and you can bet that hundreds are caught (and eaten)
all year long !

The fishing here is like living in a red state "no licience", "no limit" and you can keep everything except Whales, turtles, and monk seals.
