Am on Social (In-)Security, so the income level falls far short of the inflation rate - am only averaging about 60% of my former income,
and that was nothing to brag about, either !

True. How much was average wage? My dad tells me a nickel used to get him a lot of things. I have to always ask how much was a days pay at the time?

Money still buys pretty much the same, we just keep moving the decimal point.

I once asked a clerk , about a 1.25 candy bar, what hapened to the 25cent candy bar we used to get for a nickel. Now I've seen them on sale 5 for $15.

Yep, remember all of them.
I had to be in by dark.
I grew up in Texas and remember gas prices in the teens. Once during a gas war between fillin stations we saw gas for .05 cents a gal.

Oh yes, the gas wars! The principle of supply and demand at its finest!
Lowest that I remember was 14 cents per gallon. My ‘59 International PU only got about 8 miles a gallon with that big V8 and geared for the farm. It’s the only vehicle that I had to drive. It was beat up and ugly but my 16 year old self was happy to have it.
When much younger, all of us neighborhood kids would go down the road and fill a coffee can or two with filberts for old Mr. Brown at his orchard. He would pay us a nickel for a can full. We thought we were rich! And, so proud to be able to earn our own money. We never made it home with the money though because we would stop at Van’s Gas and Grocery, a little mom and pop place in the neighborhood and spend it all on penny candy. Truth is, it’s the only reason we picked filberts.
That orchard site is a strip mall now.😢
Thanks for the posts to all of you who contributed. We all needed a jolt of reminiscing from time to time to help us remember that we had some really terrific times and experiences in our lives.
It all seems so complicated this day and age!

For a nickel, I used to get a Hollywood bar that weighed a quarter pound - a four ounce candy bar! I can't think of any candy bar today that breaks the two ounce mark. Most of them WAY less than that!

Ronnie, I remember all of those and more.
I remember when the TV stations broadcast a 'test pattern' when programming stopped for the night.
And at the gas stations, I remember when they were SERVICE stations. They'd check your water and oil, clean your windows and more. And road maps were free! And many times, so were dishes, or coupons to collect to get a toaster.
Remember when the guy who pumped your gas (yeah, they used to do that FOR you!) wore a uniform?

I suppose things are different in different areas but I’m with Big A. When I was making $.95/hour I could pay rent, cover all of my bills and pay for a vehicle. Now minimum wage, at $15.00/hour won’t even pay the rent OR buy gas for a vehicle let alone buy the vehicle. Money, now, sure don’t buy the same amount where I live that it did in 1965. Not even close.

And they are $2.69 now for 1/3 the amount.

Same here. It might have been October that I got my license though.

Well Maniac, that line there is a summary, that says it all! Now there is no pride, no work ethic and it's all owed to "me", no need to earn my own.

I know that's not universal, but it sure stands out, about too many.

I also pumped gas for $0.27/8/9 and remember when one station I worked for, had to raise it to $0.36, thought we'd never be ably to sell any!

Also the "S&H" green stamps, and promotional give aways. got my Mom, Girlfriend (who is now my Wife of over 50 years) and my Mother-in-Law to be, complete sets. We still have some of them.
