A while back a stager asked where was lake Shasta? My smart a$$ reply was, beneath Mt. Shasta. Driving by on the way up, the light went on for me and I understood the question. That big beautiful lake had turned into a muddy puddle, side walls a least 20ft, water to treeline. In the area fires had raged thru leaving burnt sticks for miles. The news articles couldn't portray the amout of devastation that happened. Really saddening.

Merle Haggard would really be bummed out. Shasta was one of his favorite places he had a nice place there and the middle of Montana

Thanks,
Lots of nice places to stop along the way but the wife doesn’t want to stop at any of them.
We take the I-15 all the way to Montana, then from Butte the I-90 north.

Good idea👍

And all those songs are good but relate perfectly to "I Can't Drive 55!"

Fortunately, most states have abandoned that stupid limit,
although there are still some
sections on some roads that
are still posted for 55 - that said,
whatever highway I'm traveling on,
the posted limit is usually my minimum speed, but on secondary roads, I try to keep it down - more likely to get nailed by local cops
than highway troopers !

Not too long ago, I used to joke
that I no longer got tickets for highway speeding - instead, I got citations from the FAA for 'flying below the legal altitude' !

Incidentally, "I Can't Drive 55"
is kinda my theme song !

Have a safe trip FF.
Time has come today by the Chamber Brothers and In-The-Gadda-Devida by the Iron Butterfly are good long songs for a road trip.
White Rabbit, I can’t remember who sung it.
I would listen to these when going on a long trip up north on Friday after work to go surfing.
Oh yeah, on 8 tracks before cassettes.

I believe that 'White Rabbit' was
a Jefferson Airplane tune, Larry !
Also had 8-tracks back then -
what's funny is that I remember seeing small, under-dash turntables
on some luxury cars back in the
late-50s/early-60s that played
45 rpm records ! Probably OK
on open highway, but hardly
practical on local/secondary
roads !

Long-haul drives ? Made a few of them, too ! In Nov. of '82, I drove
from Manchester, N.H. down to my folks' house in Haines City, Florida
(just north of Winter Haven/about 1370 mi. in 26 hrs.) in a crappy little Pinto wagon ! Drove back in May in
a (nicer/newer) Cutlass Supreme -
cut my time down to 23 hrs. !
(No sleep/no long-term rest stops,
either direction !)

Lived in Roanoke, Va. for a year -
drove down in March of '08, went home for a week on vacation, then
moved back in March of '09 - four twelve-hour trips that year !

Have driven from N.H. to Mesa, Az.
in '93, then back to N.H. in '03 -
moved back to Mesa upon retiring
in 2012, so that was three cross-country trips comprised of four
10-1/2 to 11-hour days of driving !

Man, talk about marathon drives !
On the last trip I was 63, so it took
a lot more out of me than the two previous trips when I was still in
my 40s/50s ! Still made good time,
as I had told the park manager of
the place I was moving to that he should expect me by 6:00 PM on Friday, Oct. 5th to pay my rent and
get my keys - got there at 6:30 PM
due to getting caught in commuter traffic driving down through Scottsdale, otherwise I'd have been there about 10 minutes early after
four days on the road !

Haven't digested the whole stage yet but just checking in.
So. Cal. to near Olympia Wa. Done in 30hrs.
Anytime I start talking about a long roadtrip, heading into bad weather and looking forward to it, please alert the mental health officials.
Made it anyway. More to come.

Glad you made it safely FF
Driving that route you can't forget "Hotel California" or any of the Eagles songs.

Glad you made it Four. I used to drive to my parents in NY from Nashville 21hrs in my MG midget with no heat and bad shocks. Did it once in a snowstorm. Had to keep stopping to wipe the ice off the wipers. Just got behind a truck and stayed there till he pulled off. Scary, crazy drive but I was in my 20s then. You're made of tougher stuff! Couldn't do it now.

A$$ u me ing you where talking to food vs four, you still got it. Experience makes it possible. Less desirable but still doable.🥴

Been driving to Kalispell Montana for over twenty years now, fourteen hours on the first day then twelve hours the next day.
Next time going to fly then rent a car.
Should cost about the same to fly if you consider the cost of fuel, food and one nights stay at a hotel.
Then we won’t have to drive through Salt Lake City, almost as bad as driving through Los Angeles.

Took 4hrs to get thru LA alone! Hour and a half flight is a next time priority. Enough nostalgic road trips.

Hey, FF. What are ya doing up in my neck of the woods. Right now I’m in California visiting my folks and I’ll be headed back up north tomorrow. 14hrs.And all I listen to is the humming of the tires and whistle of the turbo…🐟on

I should have told you earlier to extend your visit. 3 days steady rain! How can you not have a sour disposition living here? Can't get out and do anything.
Had I stayed here, I'm sure I would be incarcerated permanently🙃
