I’ve finally gotten the hang of bait fishing and caught three whole fish yesterday! So proud. Now I want to learn what essential gear is for killing and processing fish to eat?

I’m interested in the ikejime method of killing and bleeding fish. I need a filet knife and a spike of course. What else am I overlooking? A tray of some sort? A cooler?

Thanks in advance!

Definitely get a fillet knife, Rapala makes a nice one that’s quite inexpensive. A cooler loaded with ice for sure, stick them behind the pectoral fin and toss them in the ice, it makes a difference just as with wild game when treated properly.

Well 3 whole fish are better than 5 half fish I guess

I had a stringer of sunfish ravaged by turtles. All gone except the heads. I think it added up to 3.5 fish. Usually I catch whole fish also.

I fillet. Bag and ice as fast as possible.

I like WHOLE fish best. They swim and fight better and Will swim away when released to fight another day.

I caught a half salmon once in Monterey Bay. Lots of seals swimming around and they were catching half salmon also.

Your doing it right there. I might add after using that method to kill them make a slice back by the tail to bleed them because the heart will still be beating, the spike method makes them brain dead.
If saltwater fishing make a slurry of ice and saltwater to keep them in your cooler.

Good advice so far you might get a filet board it helps to hold the fish. Google and YouTube are great resources check out some videos on how to filet and clean fish 😁👍
