Tungsten bead headed nymph, I know the purists are are going to reply with some sort of dry but a nymph is so insanely versatile.

Probably a Stimulator. I can fish them dry, then when they get soggy I use them like a nymph or fish them like a streamer. And they catch everything I fish for in fresh.

I can't believe no one mentioned the Clouser minnow that I used to catch flounder and red fish in saltwater, bass, northern and crappie in fresh water and had bluegills trying to grab it!

Black wooly bugger with olive body in fresh water. In salt, it would be a herring I tie myself. Keep in mind I am in the northwest, If it was just one fly period, it would have to be the wooly bugger. Now I am going to have to experiment with it in local salt water next spring. If you broke your question down a bit more, the answers could be a lot more useful and a great way to fill a traveling fly box.

Since I fish saltwater, I’d probably go with a squimp (tan)
