Only thing bad about the ski vest is the color not being orange. Hard to spot you in the ocean with a blue vest.
Also the orange vest is made to hold your head upright.

Yeah, a very good point, about lack of flotation BEHIND the head, has been made, by you guys (in case of unconscious) ... I know that we usually had the tried and true orange, bulky vests/ lights attached, whistle attached (& towards the END of my "commercial fishing career"... ยกE.P.I.R.B. attached!) And I do agree about color, SHOULD be orange. (Phookin' Day-Glo Orange, would be nice!)

I have a Cabelas self inflating PFD that inflated itself while inside my pickup
canopy on a nice summer day. It now occupies a place in a storage cabinet and
has been replaced by a reliable regular PFD.

Hello,

After getting rescued when my kayak became a submarine and the PFD self inflatedl, I have installed a new gas cylinder, but after going through this experience once and being determined not to have it happen again; I am faced with this reality. How do you go about testing this device to make sure the cylinder/mechanism will work again another time?

Seems pretty important to me.

Theyโ€™re too expensive for me to have to guess if it will work. I still use my old water skiing PFD. I know it works.

If you take the time to read the entire manual that comes with an inflatable pfd, you will eventually come across a note that mentions humidity. Seems the dissolving tablet in those pfd's will absorb moisture. They will also dry out, but eventually will soften enough that they 'spontaneously' inflate. Could be what happened in your dry storage.

I don't quite understand how a pressure cartridge can go bad, since they are not pierced until the tablet dissolves to allow the spring loaded plunger to release.

BTW. I have Mustang vests, and as I tell my passengers "They only work if you wear them!" ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Plum some are that way but useless if you're out cold. I got auto for that purpose. I had my auto for many yrs. Found out it worked by accident. I always put it back in the bag. Except one ting I threw it in livewell which I use for storage. Not sure what happened but when I opened it nx time it had inflated. Some how pull the cord. One thing I don't think many realize is they only hold the charge for so long. The reason for blow to to keep it inflated. New clyinder in it now. Hope it works. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

And never go alone, if itโ€™s possible. Just my nickels worth.
