In Lake Michigan I've had luck with a small chatruiese tube jig. If you are using live bait in the fall go with a minnow on an Aberdeen hook or small white, yellow or lime jig head
Yellow perch pictured above are on the bottom. Depends on how deep your fishing as to the type of setup to use. In +/- 20 foot of water a crappie rig works best with a hook (#6) in each of the 2 hook holders and then a 3rd snelled hook (#6) placed with the sinker (+/- 1 OZ) on the bottom of the crappie rig. Minnows or night crawlers are used for bate or a combo of both.
In 10 foot of water or less I like to use a modified drop shot. Tie a snap swivel or clip to the end of the line and put a #6 hook on the clip/snap swivel along with a snelled #6 hook. 3" up from the snelled hook place a BB sized splitshot. Bait the hooks with night crawlers, minnows or a combo of both.
Drop either setup down until the weight is on the bottom. Then raise it up +/- 6"s, this is called bottom bouncing.
A little help from my friends:
A can or 2 of cheap cat food attached to the anchor rope with holes poked in them do an excellent job of attracting perch. You can anchor and fish for them or drift if your drift speed is under 2mph.
I've caught yellow perch on lures but that is typically when ice fishing or early spring on 1/32 OZ pink jigs/pink & white tubes.
