Yea Barn, it's like that.

I was hit by a car and taken to the E.R. at the hospital.

The head charge nurse called my work and explained the situation and that I would not be into work that day.

The State Police Trooper also called my work and explained in detail and said I would not be into work.

The next day, I went against doctor's orders and went to work.

My boss wrote me up for missing work without calling in!!

ADDENDUM TO EMPLOYEE'S HANDBOOK:

Bereavement leave:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing that you can do for dead friends, relatives, or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend to the arrangements. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early.

That Exempt employee stuff is a little tricky. There you are having all the security clearances needed to do top secret work protecting the nation from the worlds worse of the worse criminals un known to the general public.

A 2" blizzard hits the area and traffic is expected to be at a crawl, therefore you are a non exempt employee stay home you will get paid anyway.

As for the exempt employee please arrive in between the core hours of 8 - 8:30 even though it is icy out. Your prudence will be noted.

YUP! I was 'exempt' for years. Instead of an hourly wage, you get a set salary regardless of how much time you put in. You're supposed to put in as much time as necessary to get the job dome. Unfortunately, supervisors tend to think that 'exempt' means that you're expected to put in AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE! I lost count of how many times I got the short end of the stick.

Retiring was the best thing that's ever happened to me!
