Do any of you have experience with fishing poles that are telescopic? I’m thinking about getting one so when I’m traveling I will have it with me. I’m currently camping by theJohn Day river and I don’t have a fishing pole with me. The pole I use for my boat trips doesn’t come apart.

I’d definitely go with a multi-piece over a telescopic

I use a telescoping "Eagle Claw" brand rod/reel combo that sets up and down very quickly. I primarily use it when I am out 4 wheeling and come to a place where I may want to get a lure in the water ASAP...fish a bit...and then move on. For that application it is great. It easily fits in the luggage trunk of the quad.

If I am going to end up in a spot for a while, and I desire a better quality...more reliable rod...then I use a 3 or 4 piece rig...just like what many folks have already recommended.

That is a bugger about your current predicament. I suspect that your local choices may be limited in terms of acquiring something yet for your current trip. Good luck if you do get to fish somehow!

I have a couple telescopic rods that I keep in my saddlebags on my goldwing just because you never know when you are going to run accross a good looking spot. That said I would consider them to be light action and fish accordingly. Haven't had any problems with them yet.

I've had both "telescopic" and 4× piece rods... They BOTH caught fish... When I get around to it (soon, I hope); I'll be buying another 4 or 5× piece rod, for "Every Day Carry" type purposes... I'd gotten myself "1/2 toasty" & decided to play with you telescopic rod, as if it were "Luke Skywalker's lightsaber"... After some (brief) giggles, it ended up unusable. {...just add alcohol!}

I had both and prefer the 4 piece over telescopic. I have to escort my wife often to garage sales and there are always a lot of telescopic rods for $1 for sale but are poor quality. Never seen a 4 piece for sale. Might tell you something either they are less of them or they don't want to let them go?

Years back I purchased a Browning 5 piece rod with reel attached, light weight and had it's own case. Nice outfit and it traveled to Australia with me and caught some fish in the 6lb range. Not sure if they're available now

I have yet to find a take down that would fit in my Road King saddle bags. I keep two telescopic rods on the bike all the time. I replaced the reels with quality 2000 spinning reels and 30 pound braid. They came in handy many times. If I was going on a trip, I took a four piece as I could pack it in my tent roll. As you noticed, I spoke in past tense. No more bike due to neck injuries that cause my arms to go to sleep when held in the same position for a while. I tried both beach bars and 16 inch apes to no avail. I am now in a 1 ton cage so I take one or two piece rods.

I’ve used them for years. Mostly an ultra lite setup for mountain trout when I used to take the horses up in the mountains to fish. Have caught 100’s and landed several through the years at 20” plus, so they work pretty good. Have also used a 12’ tele over in the Hawaiian islands, it it also worked really well, even hooked a small HammerHead Shark on it, but Lost it as no steel leader. You can get cheep ones that will still work, but the ones I’ve got At Cabelas and Sportsmans seem to be of better quality.

I’ve owned and used several. The wife and I cruise a lot so it’s great to have a suitcase packable rig for flying. I advocate that you buy a low end Chinese rod or rod / reel from Amazon, as I’ve known known a more expensive setup to be much better. They typically will fail in time, so it’s nice to be disposable in terms of cost. I’ve caught 20lb redfish on them and have done well. I normally buy the rod and pair it with an old 4000 series Penn reel /I have.
