Blue Gill on top

Yellow Perch on bottom.

You ever make a trip this far, we have more Yellow Perch than they can trap and net out of reservoirs, very abundant and absolutely delicious, eat as good as a crappie do, if they're caught in good water!

I grew up calling the top one bream and the bottom one red fin trout. Learned later it is yellow perch. We used to call war mouth perch yellow perch. I recall the yellow perch as really hard to scale.
Tight lines

I put this picture into another post on here, but thought I would do a separate post to see if I might get more responses. I find it fascinating, the number of names we all have for the same fish in different parts of the country. So, these are just about anywhere in the US that folks fish, except for a few places probably, when you catch one what do you call it?

And the second picture, where could I go in California to catch one of those? And what would you calll it?

What do you call them, where you're at, Spirit?

Most lakes in Oregon have them

Yeah seriously, that map is missing some serious info, I have perch in a lot of the white area in Oregon, way over to the Idaho border!

Hi, ranger ! Don't know where you
are in California - you may want to
add your (less general) location to your profile ! It would help others if you (or they) had questions or information regarding your area !

Regarding yellow perch in California -
as stated in a recent post, about the only lake in California where you
could catch them is Iron Gate Reservoir, up on near the Oregon border !

For general reference, check out
map of their range ! It doesn't show any in California, but rest assured
that 'Iron Gate' is the exception !

That map is missing a ton of info! Must really old or something

I have personally caught Yellow Perch in a huge chunk of the white part of Oregon, South Eastern Oregon, has a ton of them, all the way to the Idaho border.

Brownlee Reservoir which is on the Snake River bordering Oregon/Idaho has a healthy population of Yellow Perch and has since the Mid 90s when I caught my first ones there!

Just Sayin!!

Also Phillips Reservoir in Baker County, OR has over 1.5million Yellow Perch, roughly 87% of fish in this once great Trout fishery are now Perch, illegally introduced around 15 years ago!

In case you'd like more info on their range!

It may be outdated - hard to verify
how recent anything may be on the
'net', especially since my phone is
my only computer, and haven't yet gotten it down pat ! I'll see if I can
dig up anything more recent !

.I grew up in Indiana, not California, so to me they are bluegills and perch. I just have noticed that folks in California, at least around here in Lincoln, tend to call bluegills perch. I just find it real interesting.

Since we're on the subject of yellow perch, here's a little 'human interest' story that is definitely related !

The young lady in the photo is
12-yr.-old Tia Wiese, holding her
world-record yellow perch, caught somewhere in Idaho back in 2014 !

The perch weighed 2 lbs.11.68 oz.
and measured 15.5 inches, with a girth of 12.75 inches !

Okay cool!

I wasn't trying to call you out or say your wrong, and I appreciate you not taking it that way!!

I just happen to live over here and have my whole life and there's definitely some good opportunities to catch some Yellow Perch

I find they're one of the most overlooked/under appreciated fish as far as table fare goes. Most people around here have never tried Perch which can be caught year round pretty easily but are obsessed with eating Crappie which are only easy to catch a few months out of the year without a boat and some knowledge
I think its pretty interesting

Holy cow!! I've caught tons of perch from Lake Erie growing up but never any even approaching that size! Looks like a mutant!
