Many of the hardwoods Iโve worked with (oak, ash, walnut, birch, etc.) have to be pre-drilled or โwaxโ the nails first to keep from bending, and/or splitting the wood. Thank goodness for air nailers/staplers! The other thing is, those old square nails were NOT usually smooth, and the heads were thick.

Admit it... We old carpenters have all done that when we didn't have the door ease.
