I have a couple of bathrooms that you can play around in, Ivey. Take a beer break whenever you want.

I finished out the cabinet and got it plumed in all the drawers work and a good bit of storage in bottom. I pulled the bottom out of it to do the pluming and these are the nails I found. Haven't seen square nails in a piece of furniture in a while.

Won't see another one like this anywhere.

You did a great job on that antique cabinet. As a life-long carpenter, I could never imagine how difficult it must have been to drive square nails without splitting the wood; especially when most of the wood used back then was native hardwoods.
Many of the hardwoods I’ve worked with (oak, ash, walnut, birch, etc.) have to be pre-drilled or “wax” the nails first to keep from bending, and/or splitting the wood. Thank goodness for air nailers/staplers! The other thing is, those old square nails were NOT usually smooth, and the heads were thick.

I mentioned earlier in the week in reply to the Finder, the Drifter, and Fishyaker, commenting on the beautiful bird pictures that they have posted and the talent that we have on this Forum. Ivey, you fit right in.

Ty Greg, trying to be strong for Dora but sometimes I feel I've let her down. We wanted so much together and I gave her my all, whatever she wanted. It's so hard to hold back the tears for my lost love. I'm praying for added strength to get through these next few days, our pastor will be presiding over the service on Sunday. I am so thankful for everyone's support, it might not seem like it but I know it is helping me. After the weekend reality will set in that Dora is in a better place with no more pain or suffering. I know her sisters, brothers and family will miss her but that will be nowhere as much as I will. She was trying so hard right to the end. Thank you everyone

Just take your time getting yourself together Ronnie. Dora is at piece now. We are here for you whatever you need., someone to talk to you and comfort you, someone to take you fishing, we won't abandon you. Stay well my friend, that is what Dora would want

So true on the square nails, this cabinet is Maple but it being so old I pre drilled all the nail holes. I have a problem splitting hard wood with round nails much less the square ones. This cabinet was either dove tailed or square nailed, The woman I got it from said it was over 100 years old and after seeing the construction I'm sure it is. Wish The cabinet came with a book on it's history and all the names that touched it.

If you have an antique refinisher or dealer near you, you may want to have them look at the cabinet. You may have a piece that is worth more than you think. We bought a mahogany book shelf at an antique store for $40. An antique refinisher told us it's worth at least $600 as is or more.

I doubt it's worth much now as an antique I drilled a 1 1/4 inch hole thru the top for plumbing, but it was an old wash stand. I've got another old cabinet that's around the same time frame that was valued around $500 after I stripped an very poor attempt at antiquing it. It turned out to be made of Red oak. I also have an old mahogany book case with the original glass that I've got to get around to refinishing, I've seen them valued over $1800 and I picked it up for $30 at an auction two years ago. After the wife saw this one first thing she ask was when I was gonna start on it.

When you say square nails do you mean the cut nails that are beveled out at the top. My Dad and Grandpa and I used those to lay a white oak floor in our house back in the 50s. the oak was tongue and groove and when you put the nails in you angled them in the angle of the tongue, then set them below the level of the tongue. That the was there was no evidence of nails on the finished surface.. Helped to get a very tight joint too.
