I believe the message those people are trying to convey is - "Look at me !
I'm a successful business man ! I can afford to advertise the fact that I make enough to have a 'disposable income' !"

Big Al speaking of disposable income you should see my tackle box.

Really ? Have you checked their
prices lately ? No paupers shopping there, I assure you ! You may be thinking of Robert Hall suits, which was what I started with back in high school !

Children sing and school bells ring. A radio commercial by Les Paul and Mary Ford from the mid sixties I think. I remember it well, and it still gives me a bad feeling in my stomach because it means summer is over and it's time to go back to school.

All I'm saying is, the cut of your clothes does not determine the level of your expertise and your ability to provide a needed service. If the rag man has a proven record of doubling your investments every five years, I guess you're not gonna follow his advice til he visits gentlemen's warehouse? We figured that out a long time ago here in California. Better for you to be comfortable and provide valued service than for you to run around with a stick up your butt and rip people off. That's all I'm saying. And if you feel your most comfortable in a 2500 dollar tailored suit, well good on ya.

About a city's dress code: When I was in High school, we all knew to dress well when we'd go to San Francisco, because it was "a dressy city". The came the hippies, and now the "unhoused". San Francisco is on average, one of the sloppiest dressed places around. Spirit is right, we're pretty laid back in California.

About how to dress when you're looking for work:
Some folks say to dress for success.
Other times, I've heard that you should dress ready to go to work in the job you're applying for.
That wasn't the best advice for us oilfield roughnecks! I used to come home so dirty that my own Mother couldn't recognize me!.
.
We might be a little bit TOO laid back here in California. One Sunday, my Wife and I tried a new church. I was wearing the ONLY necktie in the place! We moved on....

Spirit: I am on dangerous ground trying to correct you and your comment about Noah. It wasn't God who saw Noah nude, Noah got drunk and passed out on his new wine, it was his son. The other two sons take a covering and back in so as not to look at Noah's nakedness, and cover him up. When Noah sobers up and discovers what has happened he lays a curse on the guilty one. Just Sayin....RJS
