I have a 17’ bass tracker. Same thing happens to me. I have a friend who has a 19’ low profile bass boat. He told me when what happened to you has happened to him. He said to hit the bilge pump & take off wide open. With the boat having 8 to 10 “ of water, the boat was back end heavy & the sudden thrust threw a lot of water out of the boat. Maybe this tip will help some of you fishing buddies out there. I know it’s what I will do when & if I’m swamped by a wave boat!!

Inconsiderate jerks. Glad you two are ok. I hope this doesn't ruin her potential love of fishing and boating!

When either in a boat...or especially a kayak, I dread what is known as a "clapotis wave cycle". I also know them as "confused seas", where regular waves ricochet off solid shoreline objects and thru the course of a day re-enter the waterway to mix with other waves. In a similar way, they also get generated on the fly by continued traffic when waves begin to collide with each other as they approach from varied directions. It is sort of like the "tempest in a teacup" syndrome.

Once again...SO VERY GLAD that you kept your cool and handled the situation. That is a classic situation for panic to set in...and you passed the exam with flying colors!

Ben,
Glad you guys and your boat are okay. I traded my Ranger RT178 for a Crestliner deep vee just for that reason. The wake boats have changed the nature of the lake and water conditions on Lake Powell where I spend a lot of time.

I was afraid id submerge the batteries.
Soon as i determined the boat wasnt broke and i still had power and sluggish control, I fast idled to dock.
by the time we reached dock, most of the water was out of the cocpit and in the bilge.

Fortuanately, didnt see a lot of water in storage hatch compartments. opened everything when we got home to air it out a little.

Took granddaughter out to local lake today
Winds 15 mph sustained. Not ideal but manageable.
Went to first spot I thought post spawn crappie would be. 8 boats on my spot. Lots of guys trolling.
Didn’t want to spot lock in guys trolling paths so we moved from secondary spot.
Estimated 400 boats on lake today plus jet skis.
Some of these boats are big 30+ footers.
They had the lake chopped to hell and back.
On way to secondary spot , I’m at speed. Not wide open but about 35 mph.
Had a 35 ft pleasure craft doing about 50 and a big ski boat cross my path in opposite directions.
Wakes merged and I saw that it would likely be hairy.
Adjusted course for head on and slowed to about 20 mph
Crested first wake way bow high , when it settled in the trough. . Second wave was waiting to eat my lunch.
Speared that wave full on. Went sub surface . Boat ate it it from bow to stern. About 10 inches of water in cockpit.
Granddaughter , bless her heart is grabbing her stuff , mu stuff like crazy moving to higher ground.
Told her “ sweetie , we are sinking”
Put bilge on manual
Limped back to closest ramp and tied off to let bilge pump do it’s job.
Some dick asked me to move so he could launch his half million. Dollar boat.
Told him to F off. I’m not moving till my pumps clear the load so I wouldn’t sink.
Bilges did their job and back in business.
Tried to go to third spot but water so rough my 80 pound thrust TM couldn’t keep pace
So rough

So glad you both are safe and not swept off the boat with that second 'wake wave'. Some people are inconsiderate or just plain stupid. You live to fish another day!

Glad you and your granddaughter are ok, Ben. Now that I'm retired I try to avoid being on the water when the nuts are out.

Wow, you folks are very lucky. Glad you are O.K. and boat survived. Only speared one wave in my lifetime, don't want to do it again.

All these educational comments are 'spot-on'. Anyone who has operated a boat much at all has probably experienced a tense boating episode. I could recall and tell of my 'near-death' events 'til I probably wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. Fortunately, I kept surviving to learn one more lesson at a time, several times. I have a small set of rules I follow: 1) Don't fish on the week-end unless that is the only possible opportunity, 2) Don't get on the lake on (or around) a holiday, especially a holiday week-end, and 3) Don't even be tempted to go if the wind is expected to be over 10-12 mph.!

Glad y’all were safe Ben. That’s too many damn boats in one place. I don’t know if you know what a rig boat is but it’s a big boat that knows two speeds stop and very fast. I’m talking a 15’ to 20’ wake. I was taking my friends nephew salt water fishing and we had to go around a rocky point. I was in my 18’ Welcraft with a 150 mercy and as I began going around the point, here comes a rig boat. I had a 5 gallon bucket with live shrimp in it between the bow seats. All I could do was go full throttle and into the wake. We went airborne it seemed like hours but we came down safe but the shrimp went straight up in the air and shrimp were everywhere. I was sweating bullets and the kid starts yelling let’s do it again, let’s do it again!🤐

Great story for a Welcraft spokesman. I survived a rig boat wake. You are a airplane pilot and Ben is a submarine captain. Good going guys. Glad you didn’t split in half and Ben didn’t meet Davy Jones.
