I never sharpen my hooks. The fresh raw metal turns the fish off. I just set dull hooks harder.

I sharpen my hooks after every fish I catch, and after every short distance release. I think it makes a difference.

I don’t sharpen every catch but I’ll check them and lost too many fish to not checking line and retieing when needed. I’ll take sharp any day. Caught plenty of fish with paint wore off half or more of lure bare metal spoon or jig

I sharpen my hooks when I believe they need it, I don’t believe it’s made a difference. I still catch a fish every once in a while. 😁

I used to fish longline in the Gulfstream, for Swordfish/ Tuna as a "target species" & "the hook dude" (or; as SOME call them: "the Master-Baiter") would sharpen each and every hook "in the tub", every 7 sets of the line. (1× set in 24 hours).

It's very important to have sharp hooks. It doesn't deter fish in the least from hitting your lures. I sharpen my hooks whenever I feel they need it and still catch plenty of fish. I really think you'll miss MORE fish using dull hooks than ones that you've sharpened. But that's JMO.

If sharpening hooks kept fish from biting, they would also be sensitive enough to read your license plates as you drove up and know whether you were a savvy fisherman or a neophyte, and act accordingly. Just Sayin...RJS

Good one RJS, made me laugh. I’m a firm believer in sharp hooks as well.

I will sharpen mine when I feel it is necessary. I drag mine slightly across my thumbnail…if it catches, it is sharp enough.

All this mentioning of sharpening hooks has me thinking i missed something. Honestly i have never sharpen a hook and really don't plan on starting.

What has always worked for me is the setting of the hook. Maybe the Flounders, Trout's, Stripers, Skates, Croakers and Drum i have pulled in had soft lips and jaws. Went many days with the same Z man jigs and have never loss a setting of a hook.

But if sharpening works for you all, go for it. I like my Z man jigs.

Big game fishing requires sharp hooks.
