I also, have smelled that amonia... I'm thinking that if a man we're to soak the meat in saltwater ... Something was mentioned about that in "the dogfish cookbook".

With size limits you have to bring most head and tail intact. I do gut them before I put them on ice. That way they don't have to much of a chance to urinate and cause a smell. Just got these pics from my son

You did well changing plans on the fly Gordon. Made a great day of it. I have caught and eaten thresher and mako, both very good. Never tried bonnet, sand or any other sharks.

Mako is the best of bigger shark. Back in Australia they have school and gummy shark, they're sold in fish and chip shops as flake. The best and sweetest of them all. They only grow to around 70lb

Again... "Better safe than sorry" y just feed it to the crabs or ¿turn it into the garden?... I know that I'm not gonna consciously and deliberately eat anything that smells like ammonia!

Only got caught out once then made sure it didnt have any smell after that. Rarely bought any as we caught our own occasionally.

Did you gut them and/or bleed them as soon as caught?

Ya know, Ronniejw; you cause me to remember the advice of an old (commercial) fisherman... He'd told me (40ish years ago) that, when you you go to buy seafood at the store, it should "smell like ICE"!

You're right, should be no smell if it's fresh and cleaned properly. I always cleaned my catch while out on the water, less to take home and ready to cook or freeze

As has been already stated, regulation often precludes this.
