Many Rich Men and Women target Sturgeon. Lobster is in Pacific Ocean and Maine but Sturgeon is in a whole bunch of places. It is in Ocean and tributaries and places it has gotten to naturally as well as planted. I hav hooked a lot of them. We would go Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing and get tired of NO bites. So then go anchor up and bottom fish in deep holes with same bait hooked backwards from salmon bait. Sturgeon eat a lot bait fisherman throw in rivers after rebaiting or after cleaning bait ice chest etc for the day. Therefore the Herring is great bait during Spring Chinook season.

I had a sturgeon trip chartered but then work got in the way (20 yrs ago). The kind fellow would not refund or reschedule. Never did get back there. Was on the Columbia. Now my cousin is in Bend, Or. and had his two boats - inland and ocean- down from Canada and says we are going! Sure hope so.

So what is the difference if you don’t mind me asking? Name? What locals call them?

Spring Chinook ( Columbia and Willamette River in Oregon ) are targeted intentionally by Canadians. There is chips in heads of Columbia Chinook they have same device Fish and Game use to check them before harvesting them. Spring Chinook is about the best eating Salmon you will eat. Sockeye is good too. It is a very sought after RUN of fish.

Chinook ( king) is black mouth Coho ( silver) they are same species no matter where or when they run fall or spring. There are native runs here and there still. There are many that were hatchery fish many generations ago that have spawned here and there and became a whole new strain of them. Think of different Chinook runs in different rivers and regions as different strains just like same plant type can have mega types of strains just the same.

There is kokanee too that are land locked that are usually smaller and can catch many of them when in season.

We mainly went to Alaska for the sockeye and halibut. Stuck 😜😜with catching the smaller Kokanees now. And limit is down to 4 a day on most of our waters in combination with trout.

I know what you mean. There is some super Koke runs here but I haven’t gotten into it yet as I am hoping to. I haven’t targeted them a lot but should.

Only Oregonians call them Chinook. Every one else calls them Kings... Personally, I like Black Mouths; the easiest way to identify them. Salmon fishing in July will probably be best on the ocean or near Bonneville Dam on the Columbia. There will be spring fish in the rivers but it will be the end of the run. There is a Summer run of typically big fish called June Hogs. They stack up at Bonneville Dam and are fished for with heavy weight spinners, spoons and bobber/egg rigs. Downstream from water falls and inland dams are good places to fish for salmon in Oregon.
