Haha...unless hes a flying fish...i figure i got time.....but i gotta get out!
Check the tongue of fish, there are barbs on back of steelhead's tongue and none on a Salmon. This is the fastest way to tell an ocean returning Steelhead from a returning bright, king Salmon.
Black mouth with white gums at base of teeth on lower jaw. King (Chinook) Salmon, White mouth then Coho (Silver) Salmon.

Hey Pirate. Congrats. Sure looks like a salmon to me.
When was this?
First glance says "nookie" to me. Upon enlargement, I see a black mouth (?), plus a rather short jaw for a steelie (eye placement, relative to jaw) as well as the overall shape....tail was a bit blurred to use as I.D.
Either way, the adipose fin was present, meaning most likely NOT a hatchery fish (am unfamiliar with Cali regs on that)... so you did well, by releasing.
If it were a Steelhead, the "football shape" would indicate an egg-laden female, soooo... good catch, good release, good outing, no?
