People who don't own a boat don't know the expense of maintaining one, gas, replacement batteries, electronics, life jackets, just a few. Legal requirements, licenses, fees, cleaning, replacing broken items, especially when someone else broke it, worn out equipment. Owning a boat is an expensive TOY. I've been lucky, my best friend, always leaves money($20) in the vehicle, buys lunch, snacks, helps buy emplacement batteries, nets, anything necessary. I'm spoiled. I make most of our baits, spinnerbaits buzz baits, jigs, any hard bait that we use, 2 people can go through a lot of baits in a years time, that's a hobby also I have all the stuff to do it. If there is something he wants to try, he'll bring a picture and the material to make it.
Most of the time we have a kitty of left over cash from gas money we'll use for necessities. So all together he pays more than half of the expences. We have been partners over 40 years, again
I'M SPOILED. Keep fishing. DEEJAY

A friend took me, my wife, and daughter out in Charlotte Harbor Fishing and sight seeing once. He had a gas guzzling boat with two motors. I filled up the gas tank.

This is the main reason I quit fishing for 10 years. A friend of mine wanted to buy a boat but couldn't afford the costs of ins/docking/maintenance/fuel/etc. I told him that I'd split the costs 50/50 with him if he bought the boat. No big deal costs us a little over $1000 each just to get the boat in the water every year. We were on that boat 7 days a week from march till november, if not fishing working on it. Bait, beer, food, $100 a day (back them) fuel for a walleye trip, etc. Perch fishing cost less but involved hours of cleaning when we got in. It was nothing to get in around 4 or 5pm and clean perch till +/- 9pm.

He'd invite a bunch of people on the boat that would not kick in anything, couldn't catch a fish if they had to. Eat and drink everything in sight the chum off the back of the boat and whine like little girls it was time to go in. Then when you did get in they didn't know how to clean a fish but wanted 1/2 the filleted fish because we had a boat and could get fish any time we wanted them.

Splitting the fish 3/4/5 ways (equal shares per person) wasn't good enough for most of them. After 9 years of it I told my buddy I just can't do it anymore.

It got to where it was a full time job just working on the boat and fishing. Got burned out and didn't fish for 10 years. A friend of mine kept asking if I wanted to go out walleye fishing with them. I finely said yes & I'll go out once or twice a year with them.

When we get back in 3 things happen:
I hand them $100 bill
I have a cooler with a case of beer on ice waiting in the truck for them.
I help them clean the fish.

My boat we all split the gas in the boat and bait for off shore fishing. Usually about 60 gallons. Inshore fishing and cat fishing I foot the bill. All trips you bring your food and drinks.

My fishing buddies & I usually take several trips a year. We have an old zipper bank bag that we use & before we head out everyone
puts in an equal amount of cash, from $100 to $300 depending on where we're going. That fund is for fuel & oil. If there's money left at trips end we divide it up equally & if we run low somewhere on the road we each put in more. Good system, we've been doing it this way 40 years. All motel & lodge fees are divided equally. Day trips we chip in for truck & boat fuel but it's not an issue as we never take the same man's boat all the time. We never have launch fees or buy bait.

I reread what you said about your uncle. Perhaps, since the dentists were clients they thought the fishing trips were business related. I think that is different from friends going fishing. When I go with someone who provides the boat I pay for all the gas. As I said before, boat upkeep takes a lot of time AND money. And the cost of purchasing one has gone out of sight. Split the bait, lunch and hotel rooms.

If a boat or vehicle is not involved (guide, hotel, meals, etc.) split everything.

I've got to take my boat to the dealer for an oil change & yearly checkup. That's an easy $300 & there's no one standing around offering to pay part of that. Yearly insurance is due in april. I have 3 trolling motor batteries & a starter battery. Replacing them would be over $500. That 47 gallon fuel tank gets low more often than I like. I store my boat in my barn so no extra expense there. Keeping a boat isn't cheap but I do it because I want to & enjoy it's use. If I'm going out you're welcome to get in. Tight lines.

I have a friend I fish with and he owns a boat also. His boat or my boat. On the short trips, usually 30 miles or less we don't worry about it. Longer trips we split the gas. Give or take a few bucks. I like it when I pay more. I can give him a load of crap over it.

People I invite. Don't worry about it. If I'm invited try to at least get the drinks and snacks.

Common Sense play a role here. If someone paid for the boat, the trailer, the truck to pull it, insurance for said Equipment in some cases rods reels tackle. Why would someone even think about putting even more financial burden on owner for Bait, ice, drinks, gas, tolls, etc, etc, On my boat you help out where you can. And when we get back home don’t even think about hauling buggy before that boat is washed down and put away. If ya do theses things . I hope you enjoyed your fishing trip because you won’t ever be invited again. Common courtesy is more important than it has ever been. Tight Lines

I generally picked up all boat affiliated expenses because I could . My fishing buddies would provide food , bait , drinks etc . Which was fine , however when diesel went over $4 per gallon , I still picked up inshore fuel , however offshore was a tad more expensive , so I would say before hand we would split fuel !
Still a bargain for them , I had a 33’ express which translated into lots of $$$$

This didn’t happen with fishing. I got job at the same plant as my neighbor, my car broke down and he offered to give me rides. About a week later he started charging me for gas. I got my car fixed and his broke down. I gave him rides to work and didn’t charge him anything. Guys at work thought I was crazy for not charging him. I don’t like to stoop down to someone’s else’s level. He lived across the street from me.

I own a 13 portabote. I take my friends out fishing and never charge because I'm going anyways. All my friends have gave money for gas or boat launches, bait .I never asked they just do it. I also go out with my brother in his boat . A 24 ft trophy. I give him money for gas and buy bait.costs me 40 to 50 bucks. Way cheaper than a party boat and it's 2 or 3 people. Nice. He always asks me to go before everyone else. Maybe cause I'm his brother or maybe cause I offer cash and bait . Either way it pays to pay.

IS NOT EASY TO FIND A GOOD FISHING PARTNER/FRIEND, IF YOU HAVE ONE TAKE CARE OF HIM, IS A AUGLY THING HAVE A WRONG PERSON IN YOUR FISHIN BOAT ALL DAY. IF HE IS A GOOD PARTNER/FRIEND YOU NEVER HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MONEY, LUNCH ETC. SOME DAYS YOU SOME DAYS HIM, AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU STILL PARTNER/FRIEND PLANNING YOUR NEXT TRIP, MAYVE WHIT A COOL BEER IN HAND
