The LFS is a great reel, nice and smooth and cast a mile, the Classic Pro is also a nice reel for a little less.

I have 3 Lews spinning reels but don't have any of their BC reels. I really like their spinning reels though.

has anyone given it a lot of thought onto how far their average cast is? I understand the flyfisherman who wants to go way upstream then mend his line as it comes down again. But for most anglers who cast or drift for fish in a small window or area, who cares if it can go a mile or that a quarter will do just fine.

I say it all depends on the situation. When we are casting for stripers we try to cast a mile to cover more water, but it is all open so there is nothing to tangle with except the shore.
When I'm LM or SM bass fishin out on the lake, quiet often we're castin TO structure. So shorter more accurate cast are called for.
Give or take, I'd say most of my casts are bout 30 yards using lures.

yes...thats my argument...most reels will never need to see all its line used, in most situations....unless you have a whopper on that wants to run all day and there aint no brakes!Down line or trolling, depending on the situation, will require a lot of line to be in the water column, but thats a different set up all together.I dont meant to get salters ticked off with me but i see their reels are bigger for the idea of casting bigger baits furtherout from shore.

When striper fishin we TROLL with line counter reels. We troll at 5 mph with 180 feet of line out.
When you get one of the bigger stripers, say 6 pounds bout 27 inches or so, they can take a hundred feet of line out before you can even get your pole out of the holder.
Even with that it's still only bout 100 yards of line out. Most of the time we don't even use that much line.
Isn't sayin that you couldn't hook a 15 to 20 pound fish and might need that 300 yards of line.

now for my next humble question: whats the difference and preference of a shimano curado compared to a shimano bantam?

Spot on Saw
Bomb casts for crankbaits and sometimes flutter spoons.
Crankbaits to get max depth and keeping lure at that depth for max time.
Other casts are much more reasonable.
30 yards is typically a long cast for me . 20 is more the norm . Shorter casts give me better control. If I need to get more distance I can , but I’d rather move the boat

Both are great reels. Bantam is a step up. Has 2 more bearings maybe a little more refined.
Curado is my favorite but that’s because I have more experience with it.
Got rod of one last year and regretted it afterward. ( it was a RH and I converted to all LH) That was an E model. It was a workhorse.
I just picked up a Curado DC . And a New Old stock 201 G.
I’d you are looking for a new reel I would suggest a Curado K. Very solid reel.
If anyone is interested, my DC came in today and it balances pretty darned good with my St Croix Avid X 7-4 Heavy Fast. It feels “right”
