Winters are called Blackbacks sometimes, and summers are Fluke. See an occasional Window Pane in L.I.S.too.

You didn’t say from boat or shore ? If boat then soft bottom seems to hold more fish .
Also a chum u key helps greatly to draw in the fish .
Mussels are great bait as are clams n worms ! I’ve done just as well with mussels over a chum bucket !
If shore then areas of that offer mud bottom that u can reach are generally better !
I would use worms with a 2 hook tandem rig ! It’s a little tougher to locate decent areas from shore but ask at local tackle shops they can point u in right direction and suggest best rigs n bait !

Yes, I fish from a boat. We are going to try in shark river inlet and some places in sandy hook. One gentleman suggested a spreader bar. I ordered 3 winter flounder spreader bar rigs. Intrested in seeing how to cast the rig. Thanks for the advice. If we have some luck I will post the pics.

Hey Monster, we just used to lob them, side arm when fishing from a boat. Usually the sinker will lead when you cast them. Good luck, and don't forget pictures when you catch.

Sandy Hook ,Raritan Bay or Barnegat Bay are good locals for flounder ! Edge of channels or mud flats are come places to try. !
Don’t forget chum pot , use , clams mussels , place up current of boat . Bounce baits and use lightest sinkers that hold in current . Some add corn beads ahead of hooks , I’ve caught well with and without !
Good luck !

The flounder season doesn't open until March 1st. You must register with the Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. Go to : https://www.nj.gov/dep/saltwaterregistry/index.html (it's free).

As for bait, you can use sandworms, bloodworms or clams. Use the worms that are normally found in the area you will be fishing. Years ago we used to chum with crushed up mussels. Some people use corn. You anchor in place as opposed to summer flounder (fluke) where you would drift. Keep the hook on the bottom. You can add another hook higher up for a possible weakfish. I have also used spreaders with two hooks and beads many years ago when there was no posession limit and it was fun to catch a "double header".

Bloods have always been best for me. Only use a part of the worm. If you are in a boat try painting your sinkers red and lift and "thump" the bottom. This seems to attract them. I used to do well in the Shark River and the Shrewsbury. If shore fishing cast and wait.

When they were abundant in the Navesink/Shrewsbury Rivers we used to chum for them by putting a few holes in cat food cans. Also used yellow beads to imitate mussels. Been 20 years since we saw them up here.

While fishing from a boat you do not need to cast, just drop the line straight down. You want your rig to be in the area where the chum is. You can also check out You Tube videos such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9hCnQE6jxI to show fishing from the shore.

Winter Flounder
2 fish at 12 inches
Open Season: Mar. 1 – Dec. 31
Warm sunny days are best. Chumming helps. Chum log or catfood can.
Painted yellow sinkers or yellow beads above hooks. Small long shank hook.
Worms and small clam strips for bait. Nightcrawlers will work also but don't last long.
Have not fished for them in recent years they are pretty scarce. Last one I got by accident snagging bunker.

Thanks for your help. Pt pleasant today. After 3 tries
