Ice fishing bait

What are you guys using for bait when ice fishing?

I was gifted a bucket of traps and a power auger and when I thanked my FIL I told him there was no luck on the first trip. When he found out I used worms he barely could stop poking fun.

He suggested shiners. What do you all use?

It depends on what you are fishing for. For trout, minnow's might work at first, with new ice, but latter on in the winter you might have to go small. Wax worm and such. I always have night crawlers but just use 1 inch to tip a jig.

Shiners on tip-ups or a dead stick. If jigging for panfish, use wax worms or small plastics. I've even had luck using the fat and rind edge from bacon cut in narrow, short strips,

We can't use live minnows here in most of the west. I was wondering about the "bucket of traps"???

We cant use live minnows here. I mostly ice fish for yellow perch and use a perch eye from the first fish. I use a large paper clip to pluck the eye out. It still catches fish when its nothing more than thread. Attached to a sweedish pimple or small jig.

I have a second rod stamp, so on one I put either a worm, meal worm, wax worm, or a piece of cocktail sized shrimp, or power bait. The second pole has a lead head jig of either bright pink or bright green with one of the afore mentioned baits. I work the jig a lot. Sometimes a fish looks at the jig and goes for the bait that's just sitting still or maybe it will go for the jig; either way I increase my chances of getting a bite by first getting the fishes attention. Using live minnows is not legal here.

We used to call our "tip-ups" TRAPS, up in Taxachusetts, back in the 1970's.

Thanks Able, for clearing that up.... gotta love those colloquialisms, huh ? Thought maybe the Asian methods had invaded ice-fishing, as well as "knocking off" pretty much everything else ! Good to know that I wasn't missing out on some new trend.....lol.

Read in an article from Salt Strong that a fish can pick up scent better than your dog. I think about that and when we can get out again I am going to test that theory. Might work on small jigs through the ice.
