I just turned 80 and sold my 2012 Bass Tracker Pro 165 2 years ago . I only used it maybe 5 times then I had major back surgery. It took me awhile before I was able to try and take it fishing again, believe me it wasn't easy. I tried again about 4 more times and on that 4th,time I was on a lake where only electric trolling motors were allowed, as I was coming in to run up on the trailer I forgot to raise the trolling motor an I ran into the back of the trailer frame and wound up with the shaft of the trolling motor on the inside of the trailer frame. Now here I am just my wife an myself at the launch area, and she years older than me and of little help. Well after some time later I managed to get the boat on the trailer and get it home into the garage were it sat until I sold it while holding back my tears. Well lets get back to my subject "how old is to old?" I've been thinking about getting a kayak ! I'd like to see how many yea's or nay's I get,-----Thanks for putting up with my tale.

Old, should not be defined by a number, but by how you feel. Your ability to get around. Your range of motion and your agility ability’s. And most of all keeping yourself safe and being able to get yourself out of tight situations. So old could be any number one might put on it...🐟on

Jerry, I agree with DozerDave. If you feel up to it, have the stamina and the upper body strength to paddle a kayak including loading and unloading it, go for it. There’s plenty of posts and folks on this site with some great information relating to kayaks. Good luck and take care. Let us know what you decide.

Do Not let anything hold you back. Nothing. Give it a shot, you will at least be able to say,"I did it my way" Find someone to go with you, you can help each other.
Instead of say should I do this, say hey, anyone want a fishing partner. If it's in your head,it's in your heart. Go until you can't.

I'm 80 also and I've thought about it a couple of times then I realize that I'm a bit more clumsy than I used to be and sitting with my legs straight out all day combined to make me decide a Yak is not for me. Maybe your in better shape but I honestly think yaks are for younger guys.

That’s what I’m saying...don’t exceed your ability’s... just to be able to say I did it. Many have died trying...🐟on

Well I'm almost 68 and I've been out with Edude a few times in his Hobies. I've managed to pedal bout 7 miles on a couple of the trips and still not be too bad at the end of the day. However, that is still a long ways from80. I HOPE I will still be able to do it when I'm that age. All I CAN say is don't overdo it.
When we went we helped each other load and unload the yaks from the truck and the water.
If you have someone you can go with that can help then I would say give it a try. I wouldn't advise you to try it alone though. Let us know what you decide and how it goes. Good luck.

Like Saw, I am almost 68. Sold my whitewater kayaks several years ago after dislocation of a shoulder and breaking my wrist badly from a mountain biking accident while trying to keep up with a 26yr old !
I still have a couple of inflatable kayaks, that I can maneuver just fine down some Class lll water, but I can't do eskimo rolls in Class lV water, or surf in my "squirt boat" any longer, so they've gone to a new good home. I miss them, but at some point you have to face reality.........."WTH ? You mean I'm NOT invincible ?".........lol !
I replaced them with my first Sea Eagle 285, and don't regret "becoming realistic" as to what I can physically do sports-wise, as well as coming to grips that I don't sling around a sheet of 3/4" plywood and shove it through the table saw without quite a bit more effort than in the past.
I have always embraced the finest quote that I have ever heard uttered.....BY THE ACTUAL ORIGINATOR, of same quote.....Satchel Paige's "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are ?" When he repeated it for me upon meeting in 1978, he confided that "some days I'm 18, but most days, I'm closer to the 80 that I might well be"! (Satchel never knew his birth YEAR, much less what day or month !)
Jerry...be bold and ambitious, but always be realistic, as well.
Good luck with your quest !!

Had a friend who passed away a couple of years ago at almost 93. He fished about 2 to 3 days a week. He had a 14 ft. aluminum boat with a 6 horse motor and a small electric motor. He would not let you help him load or unload his boat, because as he said he would forget to do something if he had help. This gentleman would stand most of the day on our mullet hole and fish. At 92+ he was as wiry as he could be. So how old is to old? The good Lord will let you know. Till then fish on.

Yes Go with someone or maybe fish off the bank, My Dad dad would fish from shore until he passed at 86. He loved to be by the water and didn't have to be on it.

“A man has got to know his limitations”. Dirty Harry

The problem may not be getting in (or on) one, nor paddling or pedaling around for hours...it may be getting back out of one. Picture a Corvette that floats...and will try to get away from you as you try to get out of it. Enjoy whatever you choose!
