My wife and I are taking a trip to Florida here in mid March. I was thinking about possibly going bass fishing on lake Okeechobee with my kayak. Looking for advice on other possible places to bass fish while I'm there. We are staying in Ft Meyer of that helps any.

Aaron - There are several fresh water lakes in central Florida in which you can fish out of your Kayak. I am on Lake June in the winter in Lake Placid. I am fishing not only lake June, but Istokpoga, crooked lake, lake Francis; so on and so forth. There are dozens of lake in this area which you can fish. Lake Okeechobee is good but mostly if you are a shiner fisherman and there is ""no" wind. Google any one of them for directions.

Hi,
I happen to live in that little "Mayberry town" mentioned above. We do have a launch ramp just north of the river but it would be a long paddle to the lake. My advice is to go to the town of Moore Haven on Hwy 78. It sits on the lake shore, if you can call a dike a shore. The Roland Martin marina is there and you can take a charter out of there. Okeechobee is a huge lake and the weather can be trickie. Fishing with a guide pretty much guarantees you safety and a good catch. Good luck!

I was just reading that Okeechobee is the largest fresh water lake in the states, next to Lake Michigan. And you can go clear across the State in a boat through a couple of locks like they have in the Panama Canal.

It saves a lot of time not going all the way around the south side of Florida.

That's what we used it for, one year, back in the early 1990's... We'd been fishing out of Ft. Pierce and the Captain decided that he wanted to try around Tampa Bay... put the net on a trailer (a helluvalotta LEAD involved) & took the boat through, from near Port St. Lucie, ... Probably saved more than a day? Almost certainly.

You know what one of my favorite things about this forum is? It's that no matter what question I have there is always someone who is happy to share knowledge or location advice. Mabey not their exact "honey hole" but a location that you should have some good luck or a technique that they use to help. Once again you guys have not let me down and gave me a lot of great places that I will definitely research and look into fishing. Thank you all so much for the advice.

Don’t forget your license. The game wardens love to troll for unlicensed fishermen. 😝

I'm thinking that, more importantly than the DAY we must've saved; was the "day's worth of FUEL"!!

Watch out when you by your license. Use to get mine at K-Mart and they charged me $62.00. Went to a local bait shop 0ne year and they asked if I wanted the lobster license with it. I told her no and only cost around $44.00. Told her about K-Mart and she said you got to watch them.
