Leaders less than seven feet?

I do a lot of small stream fly fishing with a 7'6" 3 weight rod.

I've been thinking about shortening my leader from 7 feet down to five or six feet so I have more fly line to load the rod with.

Any thoughts?

Seems like I used to start out, with maybe 4- 4&1/2 feet of leader and replace it somewhere around 30".

I should point out, that I was targeting (and EATING) both Bass & Bluegill {what they called "Kibbies" in Massachusetts} ... I've got no real "trout-stream experience".

I used to do that and I always used 3 - 5 ft leader no longer , throwing little deer hair poppers under overhanging branches. Lots of fun , had some good fish fries.

I used to have these wee, tiny cork poppers, that would sure put those panfish on the stringer!

Depends on water clarity and how hard you want your fly to land in my opinion for dry flies.
I have switched to shooting heads a couple of years back and use a section of sink tip usually T14 even if only a foot or so to add weight and load my rod properly for the type of fly or conditions I am facing. It also allows me to fly fish in tight spaces.
