Have you ever tried plain fresh dead shrimp? I peel them sometime and use a small hook and 3/4" piece of bait. Works great down in Gods country, South LA.
South LA, are you talking about Los Angeles Calif.
Louisiana baby! God don't go to California no more.
I use hotdogs, cover them in salt for 8 days, then another container, cover them with chopped garlic for 2 weeks,I treat five packages at a time.I usually use 2jars of chopped garlic,it last for about a years.I also use an old refrigerator in my shop to keep it cold.

Welcome aboard there mulebelly.
I used to use a dough ball made of water, cornmeal, Knox gelatin, strawberry jello and anise extract. You had to heat it up and let it cool down. Worked great for catfish and carp, and you did not smell like s#%t when you came home.

Fresh peeled shrimp is my main go to for catfish.
agree, the tractor supply or Orschelen's brands are soft, dissolve fast, solid and much stronger than the wally world crap that does not dissolve very fast at all, I throw my chunks in a mix of garlic and let it soak, never stinks up like shad and the like stays on the hook better than liver by far, great for kids.
I have a friend who always uses Anise-based products on every fishing trip he takes.... either Jaegermeister or Ouzo....which, matters not.
My dad used to make dough balls with liver, garlic and anise, put on #6 treble hooks and put them into mini ice cube trays and freeze them in gallon freezer ziplocks. We took them in the trays and used snap swivels on the line. It worked great for fairly deep holes and we caught some big cats, and a few crawdads too, their tails catch a lot of different fish too.
