I use the coffee can method without water or freezer and plain salt! Salt on bottom of can then start layering..salt..bait...salt bait.etc..etc.. cover each layer completely then put the lid on..that's it!! Keeps forever because it's been dehydrated and cured!! I have bait that's over a year old and is just fine!

What do you start with Tommy G...im interested in trying this....do you buy fresh squid, clam etc..then use kosher salt?

Use alot of noniodized salt. A good 1 inch layer on the bottom of a container. They later your bait/salt/bait etc. Let it in the salt uncovered(so the moisture can escape) for a couple of weeks. The thicker the bait the longer it takes to dry. Then I vacuum pack mine. It lasts for a year or more. There are videos on you tube as well.

Hi All,
I posted about the salted bait about a year ago. I have tried it out many times in the surf and from a boat and it works great. It stays on the hook far longer than unsalted bait because it gets very tough when salted.

I’ve heard of people salting blood worms too. Never tried that. But salted clam is the bomb.

I would imagine that a bloodworm would shrink to about nothing when salted.

Here is how I salt my own bait. Fill a large clean coffee can (plastic) with your hottest tap water. Add as much kosher (not iodine) salt as you can get to dissolve into the water. Cover and place in your freezer overnight. It will not freeze. Remove the heads and shell from your shrimp. Keep the shrimp in the can in the freezer. This makes for the freshes smelling salted shrimp I've used. I've never kept the shrimp in the freezer for more than a few days but I don't think it hurts to keep them for a long time.

I just want to add some additional information to this. Apparently heating the water to increase the amount of salt that it will dissolve is not correct. The additional salt is only minimal so don't heat. The ratio of salt to water is 12 oz of salt by weight to 1 quart of water.
