I’ve bought used gear over the years and honestly can say 100% that I didn’t actually use any of it for more than a short time. Always ends up on the shelf.
I bought a used Stella. It’s obviously a fantastic reel but for reasons I cant explain, I cant get comfortable with it.
It now lives in my least expensive rod.
I generally buy a new rod or reel with a specific use in mind. I’ll research the specific model before I buy. Sometimes a new purchase don’t live up to what I’d hoped for.
Sometimes these get successfully repurposed. Other times they end up on the shelf.

You can go to Dick's Sporting Goods and they have a room where you can try out any golf club before buying it. They just need a pond in the back for us to try out a fishing rig.
Would use fishing gear on charter boat only.
Don’t borrow tools but might ask for a buddy’s help and have him use it. Don’t lend cars cause once somebody parked it in front of a lady’s house all night.....whole lot of splainin to do.
Don’t like sleeping in beds of people I know but no problem with hotel rooms. That’s probably weird.

Whether I buy a rod or reel brand new, someone gives it to me or I buy it at a flea market or yard sale, it becomes MINE. So I don't feel like I'm using someone else's gear when I'm using MINE.
Also, I don't mind using someone else's gear as long as it's not a POS.
Quality gear is quality gear, no matter who OWNES it. As long as you don't abuse it , it shouldn't break or fail.
If you abuse it and it breaks, you SHOULD replace it. That's just me.
If you come on my boat and have your own gear, fine. If not and you want to use one of mine, that's fine too.

Maybe I’m OCD but I can’t stand using other peoples fishing rods and reels.
To me it’s like wearing someone else’s shoes
Just don’t feel right
Anyone else like this or am I just weird ?
I get used to my own stuff and I do t like using someone else's for sure. I, equally, don't care to loan out my good stuff. Anyone who calls themselves an angler should have their own gear. The exception is when someone goes with me once or twice for something specific they don't have at home. I have lots of extra stuff just for that reason.
