Not sure how this got to be about music, but I saw a recent video about trolling for stripers just inside three miles of the Jersey beach . The capt. preferred a lot of noise , loud radio stomping etc. because stripers often feed on by products discarded by commercial fishing boats and are attracted by the noise (as well as the scent in the water.)

Maybe I’m OCD but I can’t stand using other peoples fishing rods and reels.
To me it’s like wearing someone else’s shoes
Just don’t feel right
Anyone else like this or am I just weird ?

Ben, I don’t like using anyone else’s gear. Number one, if something happens to it I’ll feel responsible even if I’m not. Number two, everyone’s settings are different and when I fish I don’t have time to figure out their stuff. Number three, I always bring my own stuff and I don’t loan it out to anyone. ANYONE!

If its' good equipment I will use others. Our charter boat we use has the best and never lets you down. I do bring my own occasionally as I have two speed reels and can get off the bottom easier that his gear.

I have a set of four 30# rods that I did spiral wrapped that I really like to use and will use for bottom fishing but when trolling I understand it's a lot of work to switch my gear in, and most people don't know how to act when they see the rod anyway.

I have used a guides gear occasionally but prefer my own as I usually fish with spinning gear with the drag screwed down as tight as it will go. I back reel to play my fish, it is more reliable than using a drag setting as the more line you have out the more tension you have on the line because of the smaller spool diameter. Bait casters I set drag fairly tight so I get a better hook set rather than slippage when I cross their eyes. Anti reverse is for keeping line secure when rods are stored not when you are playing fish close to the boat and need to back off the pressure instantly !

You are right Gordon. I am looking for opinions. And appreciate your input

I understand you know exactly what to expect with your gear. That’s kinda the point I’m trying to make.
Just wanted to point out that I’m in no way disrespecting your stuff . It’s all good.

You mentioned you have 6 matched sets. Is there one you pick up first or are they universal. Like number 3 caught that big tuna last year so it’s the special one or are they all the same to you?

I was invited to go on a guided striper fishing trip on Lake Texoma. Total freebie, I couldn't turn that down. I didn't have to take anything with me but an ice chest to take my catch home. I like my tackle but I'd go along with the program, this time. After I got in the guides boat I noticed the rack of rod & reels. Every reel was an Ambassador 5500 mounted on a Ugly Stick catfish rod. That's exactly what I would have taken if I had a choice. The rod & reel felt familiar, I caught my 10 fish with no equipment issue. It just wasn't my own fishing tools. I don't have a rod in my racks that I can look at & think about the great day I had. It's just not the same.

I’ve got a friend that I go with for stripers. He’s adamant that he’s got the boat rigged with all that’s needed and wants no extraneous gear. It’s kinda weird to me but then again, I’ve not got an ocean worthy craft.

I do the same. When I take people kokanee fishing I ask that they dont bring anything.
I have 6 rods ready to fish. Extra gear is only in the way! If you want to bring anything bring lunch!

I have read this 6 times and still don't get the logic behind it. I'm always up for looking at a new fishing technique .Maybe the kind of fish you target and pole you are using would help. I have seen those fiberglass loooong flexible poles like a cane pole, used for catching little pan fish.Maybe you are using the reels as a line holder? You certainly aren't going to tell me you can back reel as fast as a fish running 30 yards or 100plus yards in a few seconds ! I used to fish with an old portugese man that had a humongous Penn reel and a short Penn rod for catching aircraft carriers, loaded with maybe 100 pound tarred nylon line, he free spooled to the bottom put the rod on the floor of the boat and everything after that was handlining. We at the time were catching halibut and whale cod. He would catch at least as many as we would and watching him hand over hand a BIG fish up from 100 feet was a hoot,( think Spencer Tracy) He hands were a blur, and he could get a fish planing on the surface. Sounds like you might be doing a modified version of that. If so, hats off to you, it's a lost art.

I like all aspects and all kinds of fishing including Ice fishing but my "go to" has always been fly fishing for the past 20 or so years. Collecting old reels from different mfg. along with some rods that might need some TLC has also been my hobby. During my searches if I come across an outfit, spinning, bait casting or fly fishing that looks almost new with little or no cosmetic damage I'll buy it. Once I have paid for it and get it home in my workshop I do a detailed inspection, do some cleaning, lubricating and replace the line to my preference. Now it's mine and I'm not worried about who or where it came from. Lake Erie is close to me but there are numerous State, County and private bodies of water where I get to wet a line. Having said all that does anyone out there refurbish old fly rods. I recently acquired a large quantity of vintage fly rods that need cleaning up some need guides replaced.

I’ve bought used gear over the years and honestly can say 100% that I didn’t actually use any of it for more than a short time. Always ends up on the shelf.
I bought a used Stella. It’s obviously a fantastic reel but for reasons I cant explain, I cant get comfortable with it.
It now lives in my least expensive rod.

I generally buy a new rod or reel with a specific use in mind. I’ll research the specific model before I buy. Sometimes a new purchase don’t live up to what I’d hoped for.
Sometimes these get successfully repurposed. Other times they end up on the shelf.
