Ducks season is almost over. Another limit (7) today pushing me past my old best season - which was last year. 108 with last year at 106. Another mixed bag day with 6 species ie mergansers, green wing teal, gadwall, ring neck , widgeon and a canvasback. Looks like the canvasback might have to go on the wall - he was a beautifully colored old drake and not shot up. How do I get this one past momma??

Awesome, I'm happy for you. Canvas backs are beautiful birds. Tell her it's for a friend. And when it's fine tell her he stiffed ya lol. But get it done.

That old story doesnโ€™t work any more. Trying to come up with something different ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. It will be done. Most have been shot up too bad - not this one. Was after a goose a minute before and threw in a tungsten BB shot so he came down with very few pellets in him - broke his neck

that is a beautiful canvasback.

We hunt in Central CA through the end of January, so a few more weeks. Heading up to our club tomorrow to shoot over the weekend.

I'd be pleased to get a canvasback! We shoot a lot of GWT, ringed necks, wigeon, pintail (but just one per hunt!), and some cinnamon teal, redheads and mallards. We try to lay off the spooneys and mergansers!

Sounds like you have a good place to hunt. Ours is all public lands. Our majority are mallards and gadwalls. Getting more GWT every year. If they werenโ€™t so small would rather eat/smoke them than any others. Some days that is our limits - GWT.
We grind up the spoonies and mergansers for dog feed.

I have only shot 3 geese this year. Lost another farm to the younger generation. His dad told me the other day 6 of them are paying $12,000 for the lease. Said they are now guiding on it (600 acres) and have killed over 400 geese so far. Season goes a couple more weeks. Their grandpa just let me hunt it before he died. Not any more.
This was my first one this year.

Nice bird - how did you prep him to eat? We make jerky out of ours.
