Sometimes if I pull the hook out too forcefully, I'd say "sorry fish/ buddy". I also do this on one of those catch-release ponds - I literally say "thank you - and sorry!" lmao
A friend of mine said "why on earth would you say sorry to a fish?" - I said I don't know! haha
How about you guys? :)

Most people I see just chuck the fish back in the water like tossing a stone but I like to put them back in the water gently

Depending if its a keeper or not, its welcome aboard or see you when you get older. Then say thanks to the man above for each catch.
I try really hard to be a gracious host on my boat. When I net a fish, I always proclaim.... "Welcome Aboard... Dinner !"
Can't say whether the the greeting is taken well by the newcomer, but most are apparently blissfully grateful and reward me by tasting wonderful.

I used to fish with a guy, who; would stand on a swordfish's bill, while I'd saw the rascal's head off... When the very first fish of the very trip was ready to be "dispatched"; he told me to "wait a minute", looked right into the fish's eye & said: "Goodnight, sweet Prince"; covered that eyeball with his hand and then gave me "a nod"... Then I proceeded to use the bone saw, in it's intended manner. This went on, the entire time I fished with him. Like a ritual.
I’ll say, “Thank You.” but it’s not to the fish, but to the Creator.
