Here's another "must have" pattern for your fly box. What have you caught with it?

That would be a pheasant tail, Mike. Not my go-to fly, but it works. I certainly have a few in my fly box.

That's a dubbed abdomen instead of the tail fibers and copper wire. Looks a little like a hares ear, but the tail doesn't look like rabbit face hair.

Many, many, many Red Band Rainbow Trout here in Oregon. No better nymph than the Gold Ribbed Hares Ear. Whoever tied that one did a good job.

Yep you named it! The GRHE is one of those general patterns that mimic small stonefly or mayfly nymphs. It is listed by many publications such as Field&Stream as one of the ten or dozen flies that you should have in your fly box. As with many patterns, you can use dyed or blended dubbing (olive works well), substitute pheasant tail, mallard or teal flank feather barbs for the tail, add a flash back, and use a bead for the head.

excuse me I need to fish now Loc: Puyallup, Washington (near Tacoma)

Caught more than a few fat rainbows in the Yakima river with both GRHE and Pheasant Tail (with and without bead head). Excellent general purpose flies...

My pattern books all call for a short tail of fur from the cheek of a hare

Yes you're right. The photo may not show it well but the tail fibers are from a hares' mask and not deer hair as it might appear. I like to experiment with patterns and substitute or add other materials that might improve the original pattern and catch more fish. I think that is what we would all like to do is catch more. Right?
