I have a reel picked out, see pic, to get a finesse fishing combo for a different approach. The reviews on the reel are very positive except that it is a single use, finesse fishing reel. That’s what want so I am good there. What rod specs should I be looking for? I like St. Croix rods. I am developing a taste for the better equipment. Any suggestions.

Ok Jwid.
Great start. I have this exact reel on a G Loomis GLX 852c JWR and the balance and sensitivity are amazing.
I routinely fish light ned rigs and the combo performs flawlessly. Small plastics , senkos, shakeyheads. All phenomenal performance.

If you like St Croix I would reccomend the legend extreme series.
I don’t know specific model to reccomend as the best finesse St croix I own is a legend tournament. The rest of my finesse are loomis.

I do have an Avid x But its a MH and suited for heavier applications. A 7-2 med Or med light xf would make a nice finesse stick In the Avid line

The Legend tournament is a very nice and is moderately priced as far as the higher end st croix series goes.

Don’t know your budget, but since you dropped a sizable sum on a fantastic reel you sound like you are interested in a really nice rod
If cost isn’t a factor get the G Loomis GLX or the St Croix Legend Extreme.

I bought a SLX DC this past year. I know it's hardly an Aldebaran, but I paired it with a Major Craft SSC 64 UL/BF and I'm very happy with both. I paid about 200 for the rod, which was about the same as the reel, but I just looked on Amazon and the price of the rod is now 347. ? It's a very nice rod.

Sorry to run on but I’ve spent years and a butt ton of money dialing in my set ups. If I can share from my experience it may help

The challenge you will Have with this reel is balance. This thing is feather light at 4.8 oz. it takes a really light balanced rod or it just won’t feel right.
My metanium is 6.6 oz. I have it on a Loomis 852 IMX pro.
Identical specs between the IMX and GLX Except the IMX is just a tad heavier
I tried swapping the Aldebaran And the Metanium between the 2 rods . Neither felt perfect . So I switched them back. Now they both feel like they were made for each other.

The manufacturer's specs say the major craft ul weighs in at 1.3 oz.

Man that’s light. I have never tried major craft. I hear great things about them

That's where I was, so I bought one to see. I'm not a bass guy, I fish mostly for trout. It'll throw a 1/12 oz kastmaster about a quarter of a mile. Well, maybe not quite that far.

To confirm: Aldebaran on the GLX is your perfect combo?

Thanks to both of you. Hoping to find options to handle before purchasing. I have the Curado DC on a 7’ MH St. Croix. Love it. Even that great setup can’t get a light line and bait into where I think I need to. Fly fishing isn’t really an option for the areas I fish. No room, too many trees. Wanting a lighter touch. Can’t even think about a 1/12 ounce weight with current equipment. I know the sound of the DC with a 3/4 ounce kastmaster as the spoon disappears out sight. Expecting a different experience.

The Major Craft is made in Japan for Japanese anglers who are dead serious about this ultralite "finesse" stuff. They only became available in the US a year or so ago. I did a little research because I was having trouble finding an ultralite casting rod. For less than 400 bucks or so.
