When They Call Your Number!

Just to make clear what a phrase means for all you non-Texans, when we say, “This is not my first rodeo!” It simply means regardless of the danger, the fear, or trepidation something facing us we have faced it before, and it is “No Problem!” Another thing to be made clear, if you have done something before, it’s not bragging if you state that you have accomplished that feat.

When I was forced to retire in 2017, I had no plans as to what I would be doing to occupy all my time in retirement. Fortunately, my wife knew that I would need something to occupy my time and energy, saw in the Texas Monthly Magazine an advertisement about the Tejas Storytelling Association’s storytelling festival to be held in Denton TX in March and suggested that I might think about attending.

Well, I wasn’t ready to mount the stage and tell stories at that time, but I was interested in going and hearing what they were doing. Well, the bug bit me and I began attending the local club’s meetings of storytellers here in Houston, which was quite interesting and worth my time. It wasn’t long before the president of the Tejas Storytelling board approached me and asked if I would serve on the board of directors and become their Guild Liaison. This meant helping existing guilds and forming new ones where there was sufficient interest.

Calling on my experience and having been the president of the Rotary Club of Houston, I found it a natural to visit other Rotary Clubs, provide their program in the form of why not form a Rotary story telling committee? I traveled as far as Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Denton, Bowie and other local clubs around Houston talking about “Story Telling” and its benefits.

At the end of each talk, I used this close, “When Sergeant Death puts his cold hand on your shoulder and says, its time to go…, You are not going to look back and wish you had done more deals, sold more houses, drilled more wells,… you are going to look back and be glad you’ve raise children who are strong, solid citizens, that you have been a strong supporter of worthwhile efforts to help the poor, the last and lost. You are going feel proud of not what you’ve gained, but what you’ve given!” Just Sayin…RJS

As usual, a right good outlook, Mr. Samples! ... I, for ONE, am glad that I have been privileged, to read some of what you have had "to say".
