I have always felt that the draft should be only for those over 50; including congress.
That would be the end of wars!

The decision was made nearly fifty years ago to end the draft and move to an all volunteer force. Partially because President Nixon felt that the anti-war faction would stop their clamoring if they were no longer subject to the draft. He was probably right. There hasn't really been much of a movement to bring it back. Personally I'm of the opinion that there should be mandatory service of some kind for all citizens, with the reward for such service being citizenship itself and all the rights which accompany it. You don't earn it? you don't get it. And it should be made starkly clear just what it is exactly that your are surrendering if you choose not to serve.

¿What about those Americans like me? (I've been "4-F", since the middle of First Grade, when a bone disease was diagnosed in my left hip.) Some of my ancestors literally WALKED to this continent, across "The Land-Bridge" they say, once existed, between Siberia and what is now Alaska. (According to some "archeologists/ anthropologists")... {My Great-Grandmother, my Daddy's Father's Mother, was at least 50% Native American/ a French last name [Serrette]) From the English side of me, my ancestors ALSO were on this side of the planet, at least a generation or more, BEFORE "the celebrated Mayflower" ever set sail, y living at or near Jamestown, VA; then setting off into the wilderness, where the "bloodline" got mixed/ the Native American & French-Canadian. Men in my family had reportedly fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the War between the States (for SURE, as a "Blue-Belly", & almost certainly; "Rebel" as well.) My father's father literally WALKED & CRAWLED across France, during "The War to End All Wars"; my Father enlisted near the end of WWII y was a flyer in the United States Army Air Corps (the predecessor to the U.S..Airforce.) ¿¿¿How much shall we give??? ¿You want ME; to "pass some sort of a test"? ¿¿Just exactly HOW; do you "propose" that I "EARN" the "RIGHT TO BE AN AMERICAN"??
¿How much shall we give? ... ¿¿¿More, more, more-MORE??
