In MN. when the water temperature warms a little, in July & Aug., our crappies and bass get wormy and taste like weeds, that is why I never eat them. Some of the perch will be wormy too, but not like the crappies and & bass. I love the perch, but I watch for worms when I clean them. It is only when the water warms. Is that true all over the U.S?
FlyGuy: I have not kept any bass to eat in a long time. As far as salt water fish, larger trout and reds both will be infested. I prefer those that are barely keeper sized for eating and catch and release the larger onees. Just Sayin...RJS
Yes Flyguy here in this part of the country it's the same when the water warms up.
Awe heck you guys, the worms are full of fresh fish. And there for taste like fish. If ya cook the fish the worms cook to. And there healthy and good for ya.🤗🐣

I have caught wormy LMB & Bluegills/ Sunfish/ Crappie, in New England, Ohio y in LA, with worms, as I recall... Maybe FL, as well. I personally have not eaten them. I always figured: "Better safe, than sorry." (If something doesn't LOOK the way it is SUPPOSED to look; I approach/ extreme caution.)
Our bluegills sometimes have small roundworms (nematodes) buried in their flesh. Spoke with the game fisheries biologist here in Pa. and he told me they were nothing to worry about if considering eating them. I still remove them for the sake of my wife’s eyes. Didn’t let her know that they had a few worms or that could be the end of fish suppers.
Additionally, they tasted just fine

I've heard the same and have clean worms out of the filet. I just prefer spring time then the water's cold and late fall-early winter when the water is cold

Thanks for the replies, guys. I kind of thought the worms infested the panfish all over the U.S. I know the bigger saltwater drum family usually have a lot of worms. I have caught big perch in Canada when the water temp. was in the lower 60s and they would be wormy. The Canadians want you to bounce the perch off the boat when you throw them back into the water. They don't want them in their lakes. I have never seen any worms in walleye or saugers have you guys?
You probly don't think you guys ever ate a worm or bugs. But truth is there in just about everything we eat. Pork ,beef ,chicken vegetables. Peanut butter. And honey . Honey is just bee poop. Look it up.lol. if ya don't cook pork all the way thru ya get tape worms. That's cuz you can't see em crawling thru the meat. It's all protine lol.

I fished smaller farm impoundments in Oklahoma and many of the bass had worms between the skin and meat. I didn't like seeing them but they were on the surface and just rinsed off. Yep, I et em.

No flyguy. I’ve caught them in summer and winter. Only difference is the winter Crappie are fatter. I’ve never fished for them in July or August because it’s too dang hot, but I’ve friends who do and they’ve never mentioned them having worms.

Have caught wormy Perch way up in northern Canada, resort owner said go ahead and cook em up worms and all. When a fillet held up to the light resembles a slab of cottage cheese with all the worms in it I will just leave it to the resort owner to get er down ! Never been THAT hungry !
