Ahh--surf perch--now I got ya. While diving abalone off Montara years ago I came upon a school of perch laying under a floating patch of seaweed. Didn't have my Hawaiin sling with me so the perch were safe. I got a bunch of seaweed ( the slippery translucent good kind ) took it home for a St. Patricks Day dinner. Chopped it up and put it in the mashed potatoes which turned them green ( the color of the day ). Made the potatoes really tasty and everybody raved about them. Try it sometime when you find some good seaweed, you'll understand how good theya re.

Used to live down there, lived in and fished Imperial Beach - lots of surf perch. Also fished off the rocks at Ballast Point - rays, guitar fish, some real nice halibut.

Yes bobber, they be good table fare. The ones caught on the ocean side. The ones from the bay, I never ate - they're bottom feeders, you never know what their diet might consists of. 18 inches or so is not unusual, probably about average.

I just booked a room at the Harbor View in Half Moon Bay for 3 nights, first week of December. Gonna go do some surf fishing. Any advice for me? Where to go? Bait? I's reading an article and it said ghost shrimp or or Pyle worms or squid. I usually use sand crabs (some call em fleas) that are generally easy to forage for at the beach - perch love em, I think that's their regular diet.

Moved from there in 98 so I'm sure things have changed. Look up a friend of mine name of Captain Dewey Winter. He charters the Mooch Better--right now for lingcod and rock fish and really does put you on the fish. 39 foot Bertram nice boat. Never did any surf fishing but the area just south of the marina, by the Miramar Beach Inn might be a good spot, its where the salmon trap the anchovies when that season is here. Likely some halibut in there now too so hang on to your pole or embed your sand spike deep. Talk to the people in the bait shop about the proper bait but squid is always a go to. Don't know if Debbie still has the bait shop but whoever is there would know whats going on where. Ghost shrimp I used primarily for sturgeon up in San Pablo Bay. Great time of year to visit that area. Be sure to bring a fairly heavy lined windbreaker as the dampness and wind can cause discomfort and take away from the fun. Be sure to let me know how your trip went. BTW Cap Dewey's number is 650-888-5125 Good luck and tight lines. If you target halibut be sure to use a wire leader. Two poles are better than one.

Thanks bobber - good info. If I run into any of those folks I'll let them know a ol friend put me onto em. I've not caught a halibut up here, but I've caught several down south while fishing for perch - that sure makes it interesting.

Back in the 80' I had a wholesale fish market at the end of the Johnson pier. Used to launch my little 13 foot Bluejay sailboat with the hoist. With very little wind I sailed out of the harbor into the open ocean trolling a silver rapala. A halibut struck the lure and was actually pulling me backwards ( Chinese firedrill ). Trying to fight the fish and steer the boat backwards was awesome. Bottom line I didn't set the hook hard enough wit the limber pole I wass using ( trying for salmon ) the fish got away--fortunately I thought. If your up for it walk out to the end of the rockwall where it starts at the overnight RV parking area. Theres plenty current there with the tidal flow in and out of the harbor. Wish you good luck on your mini vacation.

I fish kelp beds in San Diego. And usually watch what the charter boats are doing. I also Google fishing in my area. I would Google how to fish the palm coast and put in what type; ie from shore, from kayak, whatever. Also any bait works. Either get shrimp, clam or live or dead fish. Top shot works anywhere and swim baits my newest salt water lure is the yo zuri long cast. Hope that helps. God bless you
