My first Fish was on a Boat at Sea that we got on at Malibu Pier. Where Rockford Files TV show was filmed. Paradise Cove. My Uncle would take me and sometimes my dad too. It was all free because boats were big. Uncle would deck hand or do other needed chores. Cook. they had full on galley where could sit down like your at a burger stand to eat while boat is cruising.

I clearly remember my first fish, a bluegill. My Dad showed me how to use a worm and a bobber, and darn it, I caught one.

That was at a place in Southern California called the Fishermans retreat. I was in the area about 6 years ago and stopped in. I was able to recognize the very spot I'd been fishing at, next to a stump at waters edge. My head got into such a time warp, I didn't want to come back from it!

We’ve come a long way since that old green metal, one piece, pole huh? Hopefully everyone has those memories and thinks back to where we came from and where we should be going. Great picture. Thank you for sharing that in these uncertain times. Reality check!!!

As did I; had to go back to see what I missed after reading a couple of posts ! As a young 'un,
my grand-father sometimes took us kids (brother, cousin and myself) out with our neighbor
or my great-uncle (his sister in-law's husband) in their boats to the nearest river, lake or pond
to fish for bluegills, perch or bullheads (horned-pout) !

As young kids (7 to 10 yrs.), we weren't given rods and reels to
fish with; we used hand lines
(see photo) with a hook, crimp-
on lead weight, and size 6 baitholder hooks tipped with a garden worm or half a
'crawler ! Got a spin-cast rig at
age 12 (hated those internal
birds' nests), then finally bought my first spinning rig at age 15 !
As much as I despised those
hand lines and spin-cast reels,
it was a wonder I stuck with fishing at all; only put up with
them to spend time with my grand-father, whom I cherished and whose company I craved !

Once I had decent equipment
and started catching quality
fish (largemouths/smallies/
trout) I finally started to enjoy
and appreciate his favorite
sport and looking forward
to more outings !
