Hi all, I hope there are some users from coastal Southern California that chat up tips and tricks. I recently got into fishing in the ocean off a stand up paddleboard (SUP) and I’m really enjoying it! I’ve only caught a few though!

SoCal covers a lot of territory. OC. Is that Orange County? I used to live in San Diego and fished the surf. Never been on a board, but sounds like fun. I knew guys who fished from their surf boards. We got a lot of folks from down that way on here, I'm sure you'll hear from some of em. Welcome to the stage and please post some photos!

Welcome to the stage throberts, sorry I'm too far away to be much help.

I fish SoCal - out of Dana Point Harbor, but from a kayak. Was out today and had a 5 species day - Calico Bass, Barracuda, Bonito, Mackerel and a smelt. Not necessarily pretty, but fun! Here's a shot of the barracuda. Lots of teeth.

Nice!! That’s where I’m fishing from. I paddle out of Dana Point Harbor to 20-25’ of water. A five species day- fun stuff!

I’m looking at your setup- looks sweet. If you can, please post the details. Rods, reels, that yellow thing in the water... anything pertinent you’ve learned! Thanks

That yellow thing is a live bait holder. When I catch smaller mackerel i put them in there to use as bait. Those i don't use for bait i freeze to use in the winter as bait. Nothing special about the rods and reels. Stuff i used to use in Northern California before i moved down here a year ago. I am still learning the spots and methods here. Only got the kayak in June.

I notice you are taking maximum protection from the sun. Good plan. I just recently had two more biophsies and three sites burned off to ward off skin cancers due to sun exposure. I have lost count of my total surgeries, and burning of target sites. I do not remember ever being uncovered on my head, but keep getting skin cancers there. Others on my face, ears and such. Just Sayin...RJS

Yes - I may be closing the gate after the horse has left, though. I am having some skin cancers removed over the next few weeks. Back, head, face and shoulders. Did some lifeguarding in my younger days.....

Americanman28: Yes, I suppose most of us do. I am waiting for a call back to schedule surgery for another basil cell carcanoma. I have lost count now for the past surgeries. I am guilty of not wearing a shirt and working all summer on a drilling rig. Also a lot of swimming and fishing exposed. We pay the price and even when we tell younger folks the price they are going to pay, they don't listen any more than we did. Just Sayin...RJS

You are right. I think I prefer lifeguarding to oilrigging, but the sun exposure was bad for either summer work.

As an Irish kid with fair skin, I was the kid that had to wear that white zinc oxide on my nose to school (got teased, got into fights, ended up being on a first-name basis with the principal....)

My adult daughter is also having similar skin issues. I think parts are genetic, but mostly, it's about sun exposure.
