Which “trash fish” have you eaten and what was your experience?

There are many fish that are considered undesirable eating by catch-and-keep fisherman. If you have ever eaten one of these fish, how did the fish stack up as a table-fare?

I've heard skate wings are like scallops! Also heard cownose ray wings are a bit like steak. Never tried either but I would like to

I’ve eaten sea robin, cunner, and bluefish. Sea robin is like fluke, cunner is a white meat like cod or hake with a tough skin, and bluefish is oily but delicious.

Who knows what you have eaten in restaurants, only the Good Lord. I don't bring any trash fish home. I had a boat boy tell me that sea robins were good to eat if they were big enough to clean. Also, I have heard the big scallops in restaurants were cut out of a ray's wing with a cookie cutter. I know, nothing.

The "boys" down in Gulf Shores, AL. eat remoras, which are a blood sucker on a shark. Not I.

Sorry, but I'm not into eating trash fish. They may be served in restaurants, such as ray's wings, but that's thier choice. Just Sayin...RJS

My father used to keep and eat almost everything, sea robin, bluefish, sand shark, skate, i've eaten smoked shad and shad roe we caught in the Delaware river, pretty good too

I never ate carp (common grass carp) until a former co-worker almost begged me to bring him the next carp I caught. I just caught them for sport and released them because they fight hard. I brought him my next carp after I gutted and gilled it and he took it home and made a Phillipino stew and it was very good. It had chunks of carp with tomatoes, onion, quail eggs, and seasonings. I never thought a carp would be any good until then.

Also I used to fish the shad run on the Russian river with fly gear and also caught some on Kentucky Lake when we were stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. I had just purchased a smoker and was experimenting with many different food items - variety of fish, chicken, game hens, abalone, cheese ... So I kept a couple of shad to try.
They smoked well but were hard to light - a joke, ha ha. I marinated them in soy sauce and brown sugar and after smoking they tasted like smoked canned tuna. What a surprise.

I know the sayin, "don't knock it until you've tried it!" But by tradition of my growing up, some fish were considered trash and not eaten. One of these for me was carp. A few others were, or have been salt water catfish, and mullet. Recently a forum friend in Florida sent me a samples of smoked catfish, which were great.

So, there are things, not only that we've been taught culturally to shun, or avoid. If it doesn't fall into religious terms, then why not try it? If it "bucks" your religious faith, then I don't recommend doing it, no matter how it tastes. Just Sayin...RJS
