R Samples is right, secure anchor in boat BEFORE getting under way. The bow of the boat will bounce when under way and rope will snap or release anchor and you will spend some time getting it unwound from your prop !

Don't ask me how I know these things !

I think I am catching y’alls drift. I cruise around at a top speed of 5 mph. 60 acre lake. I don’t have to consider all of the safety issues the big boys deal with. If I forget the anchor, I’ll know it in 5 seconds. 9.9hp on 16’ pontoon with a 10”x 5” prop.

I saw a video of that system. Too many parts for me.

Yeah it's more of a big water thing. Plus you need enough horsepower. It works very well offshore, when you've got 5or 600 feet of rode out,and a 25lb Danforth to pull up.

Has anyone ever used "pulling tape" for anchor rode? very tough and a simple spool can hold a lot cause it's flat. 3/4" maybe 3/32" thick nylon has a tensile strength of 2500 pounds500 feet on a spool easily fits in the bottom of a 3 gal bucket .

Wainemaine: No, sorry, but I've never seen or heard of a tape anchor rope. Sounds like a good idea. I have, over time, lost an anchor or two. When one gets lodged under some rocks or such, it is hard to get loose even when you move the boat around trying to pull it loose.

Once, in a channel in Florida we had anchored my son's Grady White while we fished. Later his anchor was stuck, so he put on fins and a mask, dove down and got his anchor. it had gotten stuck in someone's storm drain pipe! Just Sayin...RJS

I would wonder about handling a flat wet anchor rode.

yup, thats why i asked but if you use 1 of those ball things or a winch, you wouldn't be lifting up an anchor by it, just pulling the anchor across the water floating on top.

Hundreds of years of round rope and you are going to use flat. I have seen the power company use the flat for tying up wire. Here is the downside. If you nick or put wear on a round rope the rope surface that is presented to the contact surface is smaller and changes as the rope rolls around. A flat tape presents a wider surface to an edge an holds that position since it won’t roll. The thin edge can wedge in cracks and either get stuck or cut easily since it is thinner.

Don’t give up on quality round rope. Flat tape is cheap for a reason. Climbers and some of you guys rely on ropes to be safe. My explanation above may be awkward, but it should get your mind twisting around the negatives.

Every ratchet strap I see is flat, every stake body semi truck uses those flat bands with those winch things that are built in or chains lol. Like Mr. Samples has said 3500 times" just sayin"

Yes, you are correct. However, those straps aren’t used or exposed to the same stresses the way climbers ropes and marine roped are used. I am just adding a word of caution because there was a lot of positive comments about flat ropes.

When I see the US Navy using flat bands then I'll think about it till then dont care what people THINK. You can ratchet or wench it anyway you want.
