My favorite is still the old original .69 cal smoothbore Harpers Ferry 1865 converted to percussion for the civil war. Killed a deer and an elk with it and hung it in the safe. Shoots a 1 oz round ball with 150 gr of fff and needless to say it knocked them over!! Good old days there.
That's a whole bunch of black powder. Prolly needed shoulder pads for the recoil? I loved muzzleloading. I had 400 grain conical in front of 90 grains of FF. I had a 36 that shot patched round balls.
Man that’s really overkill but would definitely nock em off their feet!

My best was an elk at 120 yds. Did the job for sure.
Gray, how fast is that canon ball flying? My guess is not very but It would hit you like a Mack truck.
I meant to ask hunt that question. Hunt, any idea as to the FPS that canon ball traveling?

Too many years ago before I had a crony. The 4x4 buck was raised right off his feet and tipped him right over - about 40 yds from him. The elk I hit about 60 yds and went through both shoulders and he just tipped over. Used to have an article about a confirmed 1000 yd kill with the .69 in the civil war. Talk about a lot of windage and elevation! Some sharpshooter took out a Confederate General sitting in front of his tent.
Went to the .58 and then the Rem 700ml. My son shot his buck at 280 yds with his. Have the locals that claim 10” group at 600 yds with the Rem 700ml extremes. Better than most do with their HP hunting rifles.
Still have a Hopkin & Allen under hammer 50 cal. Used a ‘double ball’ in it and at 100 yds they would be about 6” apart. It was a killer on elk.
