Guess I do it the cop out way. Large mouth have big mouths, smallmouth have small, and everything else is a sunny. That's how you get when you spend most of your time in salt.☺

I am in the rock bass camp - the eyes are not perfect for rock bass, but I guess they can vary

This is what I call a Textbook Bluegill.
Small mouth, gill has no red, light coloring that changes with water temperature, and no red in the eye.

Then there is the Red Ear.

The Warmouth is plentiful, if that is what it is.

All great eating.

Okay Fredfish. Great picture. That shows a lot a Rock Bass character.

My mystery fish is dark eyed and the spotting is very different.

Our rock bass mouth is bigger than a bluegill, but the dorsal and anal fins are rounded in the back. Your mystery fish looks pointy on both.

Deep V in the tail also.

Where is an ichy ologist when you need one?

Looking at it again, you sure it's not a crappie? A white crappie?

Long Eared Sunfish aka Punkinseed. Missouri State record is only 4 ounces. I am on the hunt for a 8 ounce one in the creek that feeds our lake. I know they are there. Not sure I didn’t throw one back before knowing about the 4oz record.

Jwid -
I finally found the post. An Ichthyologist I am not. Also a saltwater guy, not freshwater species. However, I do know that some of these "species" will interbreed in some circumstances. Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout for example can interbreed and the off spring will have a wide range of characteristics from both species, making an accurate identification impossible.

Welcome to our issue. Fredfish and I have been hoping to hear from you. The research has just begun. These Warmouth/Rock Bass/ Google Eye Sunfish are fun to catch. Mouth big enough to take on any freshwater bait tossed and they fight like a smallmouth bass. I just need a name to call them.
