Here they are. Best pictures attached. Note the lure is a $1 Walmart spinner that the skirt came apart during a fight. I put a black salamander on and fished with it. Overall back was the bait color of choice this weekend. First picture is a fish caught below the damn from 30 feet above. Last picture I would like help identifying. Eyes are black not red as some similar fish at the same spot. Warmouth, Rock Fish, and Goggle Eye have been offered up. Some call it a Bluegill, but I know that isn’t the case. Large mouth easily discounts that ID.

Nice catch Jwid, I would guess Warmouth. Our Rockbass have the red eyes, but the body colors are similar. Definitely not a Bluegill.

So Fredfish you can see my issue. Some have red eyes some don’t.
Book on Warmouth red eyes.

Yeah Jwid, you've got a dilemma there. Maybe they are crossbreeding? Does your state have a rulebook with pictures of available fish? Maybe something in there would give you a hint.

Rulebook, no.

I have read a number of articles. Lots of pictures. I think a Warmouth, Goggle Eye, and Rock Bass might be the same fish with a variety of appearances. I haven’t applied a fork to them yet, but they are fun to catch.

If you Google them, it says similar but different species. I think we need an Ichthyologist on the Stage.

May two cents? They're all some type of sunfish, including lm and sm bass, and I'd bet that they can all interbreed. That would be a warmouth if it had red eyes, but it doesn't. Maybe it's a large mouth bluegill? I say it's some sort of mongrel.

Warmouths? I thought that was how you recognize them, big mouth and red eyes. Other than that they just about look exactly like a well fed bluegill. And they're not that common.
